Choice of the next company

Hi Folks, I have three offers at hand.

  • MongoDB (Associate Account Executive, i.e., a step lower than High Tech AE) (Split 60:40)
  • Rippling (AE-SMB) - CTC - 1.4x of Mongo - (Split 60:40) - Quota ($500K)
  • Remote (AE-MM) - CTC - 1.6x of Mongo - Quota ($1M) - (Split 50-50)

The great culture & professional development at MongoDB is something i like but not at the cost of CTC.

However, Repvue says Rippling AEs quota attainment is higher than MDB and also they are offering better CTC than MDB.

Need suggestions:

  • Which company should I go for? Does Rippling have a good sales culture?
  • How about going with Rippling and then 1-2 yrs down the line, go for MDB for a higher role?
  • Remote has a lesser quota attainment and 50-50 split. So, I am not focussing on it. What do you say?

Anecdotal, but I interviewed with some sales directors at Mongo and they were total assholes from the get-go and acted real elitist.
They also gave some of the dumbest sales advice I've heard in my life and said that including channel partners on a deal was the dumbest thing they'd ever heard of.

Perfect assessment of how it is there.

I've been at Mongo, and it's not a good place to be an AE. Just so I don't go super long on this, I'll boil it down to a few key factors.

1. Metrics are life here. All of management is measuring every metric all the time. For the reps, you're not only trying to close your deals, but your job is to make sure all your daily/weekly/quarterly metrics appear in line. It's not enough to just close deals.
2. the culture is more about selling yourself internally than actually selling the product. See above on metrics. Very political, in group/out group, always being scrutinized.
3. Leadership is not great. The leadership culture attracts mid-level manager/yes-man types. People who will watch your metrics and spend more time in internal meetings than helping you to sell. Half the time, they're not even former AEs. A lot of lazy advice is regurgitated from one leadership level down to the next until it reaches you. (see Philip J Fry's comment).
4. Market is tapped. People may disagree on this in theory, but while I was on the ground selling there, there was a clear set of accounts who A) had no need for unstructured data and so didn't need a document database/the business didn't aspire to anything beyond what a normal database could do B) went to the cloud and used whatever DBs the cloud offered, no need for Mongo C) Used Mongo for science projects, but nothing serious warranting a license purchase D) Used Mongo but was never going to pay for licenses when it was free. They've talked to every account in the enterprise/MM already, so those who buy have bought. The other won't change to become buyers often.

All this to say, don't join Mongo if you plan to make any use of your brain, go join Rippling. The low pay is an indication of a much larger set of problems.

Looks like you know your answer :) More money + higher attainment + gain experience before taking something more challenging/better :)

Tough to overlook this.
Depending on where he is in career, the training/resources of MDB might edge it out though.

Pardon my ignorance but what's CTC stand for?
Regardless I'd go for mongo. Better tam and I've heard they have a great training program.

Had the same question and Google didn't really help.
I kind of inferred it based on what I read, but what does it actually stand for?

Asking the right questions. I was wtf is ctc. Honestly I still donโ€™t know. Someone said it is the same as OTE. Okay, but what does it stand for. Customer To Clown ratio?

Have you asked the recruiters their vision on your career there? did you communicate which way you wanted to grow?

Iโ€™d compare them on Glassdoor based on best overall score, CEO rating, business outlook and benefits. Based on previous comments on mongo, Iโ€™d rule them out altogether.
