Company changes

Looking for some advice - I work for a pre-IPO company as an AE. Recently, they have completely changed our comp to not get paid upfront, we now get paid on consumption (which pretty much makes us CS) and we done get paid until EOQ.

I love the company/product but there is very clear favoritism and I am having a lot of trouble with leadership. I am a consistent top performer and find that other reps are gettting fed based on "merit" however, my numbers are much better, Whenver i point that out I get told I am being negative. When anyone at the company tries to bring up any issues with a very specific leader (like the apparent favoritism) we are told we are not respecting leadership and looking at them like "peers" and the ones who go belly up with this ass backwards plan are getting fed.

I dont want to leave because the product is really great, but I think it is getting to that point especially since I am making ~50% less than I should be and am taking on MORE responsibility. Is it wrong to leave? also when interviewing how do I explain the reason I am looking? Its all very frustrating

At the end of the day, you are expendable. I personally don't care if I like the product or not, if there is an issue where my life is miserable due to a circumstance create by an environment, I leave said environment.

preach! There is not enough time in this life to suffer in hopes it will get better. Short-term stays where you leave on your own accord are easily explained away in an interview process and your happiness is everything.

Agree, when companies start pushing commissions to paid invoice it means financial difficulties. Time is your finite resource so time should be spent building a book of business with a financially stable company so you can create a career not just a job.

You don't have to communicate to a new company why you are looking for a new role. You can always be looking for a new opportunity, or similar, when you get to the interview stage.

It doesn't hurt to look, and it certainly doesn't hurt to leave an environment that isn't beneficial. If you can make the money you should be making elsewhere, then you have that option.

There is never an issue with interviewing and testing the waters. With all the issues you are having I would assume other peers would say the same thing

Nothing wrong with looking and if you really like the product and the product niche that your current company is in it may be worth looking at who your competitors are and start to gently cast some lines that direction.

Like @antiASKHOLEsaid, at the end of the day you are expendable to that company and make sure to always look out for yourself.

finding a product that you like and truly believe in is always possible. If you are unhappy in your current org, start researching what other products are out there that you really can get behind, then start applying to those places.

ok so its 100% ok to leave. sounds terrible from that description.

if you feel like you are under valued and underpaid those are ALWAYS good reasons to leave.

* inquire why paid on consumption vs commission - could be a sign revenue challenges or they simply want a predictable cost structure. If you have influence over consumption it's fair enough (traditional AM role), if little control over consumption, you have no control over your comp and need to bail if you want to work for more than a base salary?

*Next (AE) gig interview would respect you for walking away from a non- commissioned sales role. Paid on consumption is not sales, it's CS or AM at best.

*Finally, "you really like the product" - snap out of it!?...I love McDonald's fries, but working there is not going to meet my financial needs (not a knock on Micky D's, it was my first job - great company)

*ask smart questions, hear answers, make a decision
