Dilemna - star or go to management.

An opportunity has come up to lead my current sales team.

Currently I make anywhere from $250k-$300k annually and this has proven to be consistent.

I think I can sustain this type of performance for a few more years. I'm almost 40 and don't want to be an old dried up sales rep, my biggest fear. I lack control and can easily be screwed by a new director or an acquisition going my way.

My work life balance is amazing, I work from home or the office (do whatever I please) and travel as I want.

Director of Sales for my team has a higher salary and smaller percentage of commissh. Base/Commissh is $175-250k range. I feel confident that I can grow the business and get back to the $300k range or higher in next 2-3 years.

Obviously I'll be tied to my desk and potentially running the roads more with my sales team. I'll lose some work life balance.

What do I do savages?

I am very ambitious.

I piss excellence and want to be the supreme sales leader of a tech company at some point.

Thank you

If youโ€™re 40 and looking to move into management I would say now is the time. Just keep in mind being on the road more and away from family.

Do you want to be / like being a leader? I think it is a personal choice. I tend to gravitate more towards leadership roles due to my personality so I would probably pick the sales leader in this scenario.ย

Some people love the freedom of being an IC.ย

Both roles sound like good options.ย

You said in your post that you want to be a sales leader of a tech company at some point. Seems like the logical move is to go into leadership?ย

Agreed, but hoping to hear from other leaders.ย  Is that jump worth it or should I make $$ when I can.

Personally, I'd say if you have the opportunity to move into management, and that's your goal, then you should do it. That's what I did.

Yes you make less money at the beginning but you can grow into making even more in management if you are with the right company.

Being a manager is taking a backseat and helping other become stars.ย  If your ego can live with that and you can gain personal satisfaction from other's accomplishments rather than your own then you ready to be a sales leader.

If not, you'll be that director that you're worried about getting...

Hereโ€™s the thing man. Right now, you control your own destiny to an extent. Getting into management means you take on a bigger number and have a lot less control. I donโ€™t know if that is important to you or not but if youโ€™re liking the style you lead now then keep killing it and living that lifestyle. Management has its perks but more is going to be expected of you by the nature of what the position will bring. Awesome to hear how successful you have been as well
