Do I switch jobs now from a tenured spot right before the impending recession?

Oh hi friends! Been a while but I'm back to cry on y'all's shoulders. So, my question is this: recession is coming (everyone is saying it more than Ned Stark talkin' about winter before they chopped his head off), but we all feel it coming like a cloud of locusts over the hills.

I see signs that my company is about to shit the bed in more ways than one. My job is safer than most, I know that, and I've got tenure here and a reputation that is overwhelmingly positive. But I wanna get the hell out of here, I feel like it's time, and there have been opportunities at companies that are super secure from a recession standpoint.

My question is this: if a killer opportunity comes up at a company that's super recession proof (or maybe more recession safe than others is a better way to put it) do I take it? Especially if it's a job that's easier to make money, less internal competition among reps, and way more growth potential once the recession clears up.

Would appreciate your advice and feedback my dear Savages.

Master class, please. I don’t pay attention to any of this. Not because I don’t want to but I don’t have the time or brainpower to translate to something I’d understand. You should post about it for those of us who want the info but don’t know what’s bias, fear mongering for clicks, etc. 😬

nonono, everyone is changing the rules on what a recession is. It has not been 2 quarters in a row of shrinkage so by that definition, not a recession, just not a bull market yet

If you have a killer opportunity where it is easier to make money, less recession proof, and overall a better role your happiness I would pursue it.

However, highly recommend back channeling to current and former reps before making a move. During the interview process, companies at times over exaggerate how their reps are doing and how they are recession proof.

Forgive my ignorance, but what is back channeling?

Basically talking to a rep, without the Hiring Manager knowing. So you ping a rep on LinkedIn that used to work there or still does.

That’s the ideal opportunity that you have described. I am sure to grab it if I have a feeling down my throat that I need to get the hell out of my current org.

Definitely feel that, it's like the whole boat is on fire and only like 13 people out of the 5000 notice it's on fire, and 7 of the 13 have already left haha

Welcome back! If something great comes your way, you should definitely look into it. However, using the words "recession proof" while talking to you about a position should be a red flag in and of itself.

Well recession proof is the word I'm using just based on the product I'd be selling, the company I work for now sells the same thing but they're running the business like jabronies and it isn't going their way

Avoid jabronies whenever possible.

So you're thinking a hop to a competitor? Could be a good move.

Yeah exactly, moving to competitor that legit sells the same product

How is that more recession proof if it’s the same product?

yes. if a killer opportunity in a recession proof (or resistant) industry comes along.....and you want to leave....you FOR SURE should take it! why wouldnt you?

I would just make sure that its really as recession proof as you think it is haha

If the right opportunity comes up and it is the right fit for yourself personally, why not go for it.

Only word of caution I throw out there is if that companies shit hit the fan and they had to roll with layoffs as well they will probably immediately look at the low hang fruit of last people in are the first people out.

I just made a similar jump from a sinking ship to a better company and product market fit and do not regret it one bit. There’s always risk involved when making a switch, but I’d rather take the jump then sit back and wonder what could’ve been.

I literally just changed companies this month. Do it if it makes sense for you professionally. You can’t control a downturn or a key customer just going under out of nowhere. If you perform, you are good.

How do you know when is the right time to switch companies?

I was hired at a really good start up about 4 months ago for a SDR role that I was told I wouldn’t be in for very long. They’re gonna go public in the next year, but Zoom Info reached out to me about an Account exec position. Now I’m wondering if I should take the guaranteed route to AE or let my shares vest and get to AE at the place that took me. Usually I wouldn’t consider jumping so quickly, but AE is AE.
