Do you do your work on your company laptop or personal computer when at home?

The only stupid question is the one not asked, right? Genuinely curious, what's everyone's stance on only using their laptop if they are away from home or in the office?

Personally, the familiarity I feel with my own equipment is a big factor. And apparently I'm one of the few PC people in a Mac world so ... ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

My company would blow a security gasket if they found out I was using my machine to do work for the company. They've installed security profiles to ensure our data is not easily stolen or leaked.

If you want a PC, ask your company for one?

Good point! What about for prospecting / outreach?ย

Keeping everything past that on a work machine? Utilizing both?

I get what you mean though, I can ask definitely and see what's up. Appreciate the insight!

If you are doing work, use the machine you were given. The security risk you pose to your company by using personal equipment is fireable at some companies. Just don't put you or your company at risk.

Security concerns are real. I worked for one of Canada's biggest companies and the VPN alone was wild. Rotating keys on a dongle and all that jazz.

Took 45 minutes to boot up. I think it was overkill.

I dont own a personal laptop, whatever stuff I need to do online that isnt work related I do on my iPad and keep the work comp for work stuff. Have never really felt the need for a laptop with how awesome the iPads are now.ย

Emailed about switching to a windows laptop. I have enough switches, I could probably get a dock and just switch a monitor over, my desk doesn't have space for any more.ย

I have a standing zoom meeting every week at 7:30 thats listed as "[my name] client catch up meeting," Thats really just an excuse to use my company's unlimited zoom account. It's a private zoom meeting that I use to host DnD

Company laptop for company work every time.ย

The farthest I stray from the above is writing a Linkedin post or adding someone while using a personal machine.ย

Personal computer here but we are cloud based everything. If I need internal resources than I can log into a work computer via VM. Also I would rather not mess up and look at a website that might be restricted from the work PC (not porn) and end up violating a web policy and getting canned.

I'd like to hear more. When you say cloud based, can you give an example just to make sure I'm on the same page?

In my case, I don't see much issue with researching prospects, sending emails, etc on my personal machine. Granted, I'm an SDR so I'm not in late deal stages where the information would get to need a secure medium.ย

Doing outreach, booking meetings and qualifying a prospect isn't gonna break the books in my opinion. But I get the perspective (and the security concerns overall) to do it all on the company machine.ย

Yep, we are on the same page. If there's a mobile app I should be able to use my machine as well, as long as I'm productively using it, and not alt tabbing into overwatch waiting for the dialer to get a connection. ๐Ÿคฃ

Thanks again for chiming in.

Company laptop - don't have nearly enough computing power on my personal, plus my VM and everything for demo's are on the work computer.

I started during the pandemic so my first few days were on the personal laptop, but that was mostly just reading and increasing knowledge.

I once had a rep refuse to do a Teams session with screen share with me because she insisted on using her own PC. I was new so I asked leadership if that was normal. They shrugged. I said what about security? They shrugged. I get BYOE, especially if you protect it with VPN access (this place didnโ€™t) but to allow people to not play along because of it? Outrageous.

Whether WFH or not I have my personal laptop and work laptop running. A lot of people like hooking up an HDMI to their work laptop and running two screens that way, but I find being able to have totally separate operating systems allows me to multitask even better than one laptop running with a monitor. Plus I'm a mac guy and have my personal mac but my work gave me a thinkpad so I like being able to have one computer that's Apple :) ๐Ÿย

It's not possible for me to work on a personal computer, we're all given company laptops as well as phones. Have company technology installed on each, have to authenticate on phone to get onto laptop, etc.

But if someone did find a way, they'd likely make someone in security explode.

However, I do prefer personal tech at jobs where I've been able to use it.
