Don't Be Stupid Like Me

I was a rockstar at my last company. I was training new hires, managing a team, and leading North America in total deals and revenue for my Fortune 500 company as an SDR/Inside Account Manager paired with Outside Account Managers.

I took a new job with a smaller company as an AE where I was able to double my OTE. My new base is higher than my old OTE. I didn't think they were a direct competitor but my old company disagreed and let me go the same day I gave notice. I was banking on having some time to close things up with my old accounts and take notes of some of the best years of my career, but I didn't get it.

With my CRM access pulled and all access to my notes gone, I was left with a bunch of stories about how awesome I was without many specifics.

I've sold and closed hundreds of deals in my life, but the specifics of those deals, sometimes even the customers, can get fuzzy.

Do yourself a favor and write down your big wins. Use the deal tracker here, a google doc, or even a notebook, but write them down! My stories without details start to sound like the guy who was really good at football in High School but doesn't play anymore because he got hurt. Without details, the stories he tells sound like fiction.

Do you wish you had more detailed records of your previous wins?

Bummer to learn this the hard way but a good reminder for anyone, especially if you are thinking about moving roles.ย

A lot of sales orgs are going to let you go the day you put in notice, not all, but its fair to assume that will happen so have your ducks in a row before you put in your notice.ย

ugh thank you for this reminder! I'm kicking myself for not keeping better track of this - even just company names would've been so smart to keep written down somewhere!

Ouch, I started doing that several years ago and it's been really helpful when discussing past performance.ย

They call me Daddy, Sales Daddy
Good lesson.ย  My last company did the same to me - fired me the day I gave notice.

I learned a long time ago that you need to be able to walk out the day you give notice.ย  You may be a nice guy with altruistic goals and interests, but not everyone sees it that way.ย  Take home everything you want to keep before you give notice....in fact do it a couple weeks in advance so there's no suspicion.ย ย

Not intentionally, but the thought did come as I was trying to fill it out and realized I only had 3 deals I could give details on from memory.ย

Many reps have shared how they have kept track of every deal. It also helps you to ensure your commission tracks properly. I started with an excel sheet, and I still have a copy of it.

Pro tip: There's a CSV upload feature in the Performance Index where you can send us a file of all your closed/won deals, and we'll upload it for you!

I would have needed to have written them down in a csv, but thatโ€™s a pretty cool feature.

I would love to remember what Iโ€™ve done, but I also have a tendency to let the post go. I guess thatโ€™s part of former athlete syndrome. Itโ€™s ingrained to move on to the next play.

Do you still wear a full suit to your 1st meeting with a prospect, or is that completely dust now and feel like a used car salesman?
