Extended Fasting

Hey sales fam,

I remember @sahil posting about doing a 36-hour fast last week so wanted to discuss this topic.

I've done a 48-hour fast in the past and it was a very interesting experience. I started Friday night and didn't eat until Sunday night.

Summary, Friday night I had dinner, had sex, took a flight to Cartagena (From Medellín) and when I got to Cartagena at around 7 AM I was hungry but nothing too bad. I tried to sleep but took me about an hour (I am usually able to fall asleep pretty fast unless there is something specifically stressing me out).

I woke up at around 2 and went to tour the city, I visited the San Felipe fortress which was a decent uphill walk but nothing too strenuous. I felt good energy-wise but was definitely starting to feel hungry.

At around 7PM I was so fucking hungry I was fucking annoyed. This was the hungriest I felt during the 48-hour window. I walked through the city and socialized a little bit once I was back in the hotel.

I went to sleep at around 12 and woke up at 5 and couldn't go back to bed. This was when I felt the mental clarity that many people talk about. My body felt light and I'd flex in the mirror and look fucking shredded.

I'm always in good shape but during this fast, I was really surprised about how defined my body looked, especially my abs.

I went for a light swim, toured other areas of the city, and felt good but I'd say that around 4 PM I started to feel a little weak, I was still sharp mentally but didn't feel very strong.

I relaxed at the pool for the next couple of hours until it was time to break the fast. Which was deeply enjoyable.

Note 1: I mentioned I had sex not to brag about not being a virgin but rather because I wanted to share all physical activity done within the 48-hour window. I'd also note that I probably did too much physical activity during my fast. Nothing too high intensity but just constant activity throughout the day. I'd probably keep it lighter if I were to do it again.

Note 2: I did this due to the health benefits shown in some research, e.g. one research showed that during fasting, the body begins looking for sources of energy, and our system is intelligent enough to use the damaged cells as fuel first, such as carcinogenic cells first.

I'm curious to see if anyone here has tried fasting or is looking into doing it? Also looking to hear everyone else's experience.

Same for IF, I do about 16-18 hours and sometimes one meal a day (lunch).

No results yet tho lol

Are you looking to lose weight or what is your goal with IF? It might simply mean that you achieve a calorie surplus in that one meal.

How are you feeling with IF overall though?

I'm trying to lose weight, eat less crap and overall be healthier.

It was a rough first week feeling nauseous without breakfast. Green tea and lots of water helped. Now I go 16-18 hours without feeling anything.

It is tough but probably not as hard as it sounds. Lmk if you try extended fasting, fox 🦊

I do up to 72 hours! Good way to kick off a diet, get into ketosis, cleanse, etc. Fasting puts you into autophagy where your body is essentially gets rid of older weaker cells in your body (these are the cells that lead to cancer, disease, etc). Great for longevity and your body releases tons of adrenaline keep you focused.

Yes! Autophagy was one of the main reasons i decided to do it. Forgot what the exact term was so I'm glad you mentioned it.

Jocko Willink mentioned on his podcast once that the best way to start a “diet” is to begin with a 24-48hr water fast bc it helps reset your cravings and such. I put diet in quotations because I’m considering doing it since recently finding out I’m both lactose intolerant & gluten sensitive - really need help to stop wanting all my normal foods (well- beer actually has been the hardest).

At least you are gluten sensitive and not intolerant. I've met gluten intolerant people and they tend to have a tough time.

I’m glad it’s not celiac… but I might honestly qualify as intolerant idk. This is all still new to me. Yesterday I ate a single Oreo and was in excruciating pain for about an hour, and it eased up to bearable pain for about 2 more hrs before clearing up. Sometimes I can eat food that comes from the same fryer as gluten containing food with no problem (French fries, tots, etc) and other times even that will send me.

It’s a weird and shitty time to be me rn. Lol.

I've done IF on and off, 16-8 split.

Only extended fast was after a surgery when I was a ton of opiates and couldn't really eat (or do much of anything) for a few days.

How are you liking IF? And that post-surgery recovery sounds tough, how many days was it?

I really don't mind IF. Kind of just fell into it again recently as my GI and naturopath put me on a low FODMAP diet to reset my gut.

And the recovery was brutal... It was a septoplasty (#2, first one didn't take). Too many shots to the face/nose in rugby plus the way I was just structured.

Felt like an elephant was standing/dancing on my face.

Percs weren't strong enough so my wife (then gf) had to go get liquid morphine, which I didn't know was a thing.Couldn't eat, shit, or really sleep - awful night terrors. That was probably a solid week, but was basically out of commission for 2.5 weeks.

I was able to jump on a couple of calls after about 2 weeks to close an $850K RFP I'd been working on for quite some time, so that certainly helped make me feel better. (along with the percs I re-started lol)

this is a VERY detailed post.

didnt Sahil mention he did a water fast? or am i making that up?

I have not really spent time trying to understand the health benefit of fasting, but it just sounds so counter intuitive to me.

Maybe, im not sure haha. I should've specified mine was a water fast as well. Not sure if I'd do a dry fast.

If you are interested in learning more, I'd recommend listening to JRE Podcast with Dr. Rhonda Patrick. She goes into a ton of details about fasting and the research behind it.

I couldn't do it. I do IF occasionally, but any extended fasting there's just no way. more power to you though for being able to do it and stick with it. I just get way too moody and groggy if I don't eat regularly.

It is hard but mainly during a few specific moments, if you are able to get through those you'll be fine.

I did not eat every other day and the days I ate, I tried to stay under 2000 calories. Did it for a month and was surprise at how easy it was! Currently not eating Tues/Thur and restricting calories other days. (was 270 - currently 235 - Goal is 210 or less.)
