Basically its a single VP of Sales who works with a few different companies.

Its a big concept in the Finance and HR areas where small companies can't afford a CFO or HR rep.

Why is it odd for Sales? For Seed and Series A companies the amount of sales leadership is smaller but just as significant to get the revenue fly-wheel rolling

Interesting! So are you just building out process and structure but mostly those reps get separate product training etc at the company?

Not exactly, I would build out the process, hire the reps and potentially even execute the strategy.

This would depend on the founder and how they are looking to execute. The reality in a seed/series A company there is about 15-20 hours of sales leadership to do

I have seen job ads for these types of positions on LI and elsewhere. I'm always curious as to how they work out for both the company hiring one of these guys and the sales team being managed.

I can't imagine there being too much 1-on-1 with the sales team, if the fractional leader is being split between multiple companies. I would assume its management by numbers mostly?

And do the companies hiring fractional sales leaders get much more than a generic template?

There are all types of fractional positions - at the end of the day it is about the amount of time a founder needs the resource - what ever the resource is
