GoTo 1st Cold Email Subject Line?

When you reach out to someone by email for the 1st time, what is your GoTo subject line? Are you doing the same ol' same ol' or are you changing the game? (this isn't the sub. line I'm using, I'm just asking this to you savages)

The most effective political fundraising email of all time had a subject line of “hey”

Try that and tell us how it goes?

really? I'm honestly curious why that worked so well if true lol

because it seems impossible that it would be the subject line of choice for a mass email campaign, so your brain thinks 'it's a real person' and you open it.

to me it screams "Scam" since its not the kind of thing I would send to a personal connection (friend, family member, whatever). But I could also be totally wrong and most people's brains don't think that way.

i totally agree, 'hey' + unknown sender = insta-delete, but i think people who are elbow-deep in thinking about email marketing/selling process these things differently.

The broader concept to apply (for me) is that the less the subject line seems like it was written by a corporate drone, the more likely it gets opened.

I first read about it in the book “Groundbreakers,” but here is an article that briefly mentions it: https://www.theatlantic.com/technology/archive/2012/11/hey-i-need-to-talk-to-you-about-this-brilliant-obama-email-scheme/265725/

I don't know what you are selling or how competitive the space is, but I do think if you change it up a bit and try to stand out, you will find success

I like it for calendar invites but I think it’s overplayed for cold outreach

For example if I was selling Retool, one of my subject lines would be: "are you engineers spending 25% of their time building internal tools?"

This is ALL about them. Not about "your company". It's about them, their engineers, and a problem that they might have that YOU can solve.
