Has anyone ever heard of a Negative Commission?

Yesterday I had a negative commission on my statement. Straight up taking some money away from me so I would have made more not getting the order. Granted, it was not very much, but the principal is what really set me off. Nothing in my contract nor have I ever had conversations about this with my boss before. Long story short we had one job that the company quoted wrong (not me) and the company lost a little money. I immediately asked my boss via email there was an error for this project and he said there wasn't. Minutes later I confronted him and he walked it all back while putting the commission to what it should have been. In my mind it is about the principal, not the money. If I start giving an inch they will take a mile. It's not like I get extra commission when the project goes well LOL. Has anyone experienced this before?

That is called a Clawback, and yes it's common. It's shitty that they didn't at least give you a heads up first though.

Clawbacks or chargebacks are thing. But this sounds like the deal wasn't profitable due to someone else's error and they grabbed money from you? No, I've never heard of this. This is a management/process problem. You were absolutely right to lose your mind if that what happened.

@oldcloser This had nothing to do with me. We have jobs that do well and some that don't it is the nature of the business. What surprised me was that they this move was pulled out of nowhere. I've been at the company for 5+ years.

Yeah... that's how it read to me. The new ways to nitpick sales never stop. Glad you got your refund.

I had a job fuck me on $7000 in commission because of a backoffice error. I never got the money but I get the frustration.
Unfortunately clawbacks are a part of life. Just be grateful you don't work on a draw

Fortunately at the time it was a drop in the bucket. If that happened today I would lose my mind over it.

Since Fenderbaum missed this one, I need to do the dirty work.
It's "principle".
HOWEVER - it affects your principal, so it's actually a pretty nifty typo.
Sorry it happened through no fault of yours. I am glad you got it walked back. I'd just say lesson learned - if you're able to triple check the quotes done by the team, that would be my suggestion. Trust nothing and nobody.

I see that Clawbacks have been explained, so I won't do that.

The unfortunate reality is that even when someone else makes the mistake, the sales person suffers. So you need to question everything and make sure its 100% accurate before its sent to the client. You own the account, right?! So the buck stops with you.

I agree to an extent. I think we are getting a little sideways here. This was an internal issue that I could not have prevented. It was by no means and end of the world job because he have dozens of other projects with the same customer. They just decided it was in their best interest to deduct from me out of left field.

One of the ONLY things I like about being on consumption right now is knowing it is almost impossible to suffer a clawback. Those things fucking suuuucckkk.

good to confront them but it doesn't seem like healthy practice.

is it a clawback from a churned deal?

Nope! We still have the customer. We had about 10 different deals with them and they decided out of the blue to try and give me negative commission for one of them. It had to do with internal incompetence, but not sales related.

Clawbacks or deals being unwound are common but I have only seen that when you have been paid on something that then is changed - I can't understand why any company would make up any sales losses by having their employees pay for a contract.

Did you get ANY positive commission on it?

Iโ€™ve seen it in some companies before but honestly itโ€™s not worth sticking around in those environments. Run!
