Has marketing ever done anything good?

I know we all hate on marketing - but has anyone ever had a great marketing team that actually added a lot of value? what did you think made the difference?

I have a good friend that is legit when it comes to lead gen but he’s the only one I’ve come across that has actually moved the needle in a meaningful way that I’ve seen.

I ran a “Smarketing” approach at a startup. I lead sales, he lead marketing, but we functioned as a mutually accountable team. We scaled that bitch so damn fast by only engaging in campaigns and initiatives that got us both to our goals.

In what way? Marketing is actually pretty encompassing. They can handle product development, delivery, pricing adjustments, and advertising/promotion.

I worked with a good product manager (handles marketing as well) who was really good at not only getting feedback internally and using it to help develop new products, but very good helping create material and supporting documentation. always went out of their way to get voice of customer feedback personally which I appreciated. Too many times marketing relies on data, surveys, etc; when talking to one is more valuable.

Supporting documentation and prospect case studies and pricing. Ours were almost always never up to date though, so I'd make PDFs of screenshots and product demo's and all hands meetings.

So while they're responsible for all that, they didn't help all that much, especially with MQLs..

I am not sure sure if it’s the marketing or agency who marketing works with but we use to get good leads in my past company

The key is marketing accountability, when arbitrary metrics are the goal, which they typically are, then typically it isn't very useful

Here and there, I've across talented marketing individuals. But entire teams? Meh.

The frustrating part is the lack of accountability. They often don't experience the same target pressures, etc.

This is it exactly - I know a couple who are excellent, while the rest ... to be honest, I don't know what they do all day.

having done both... i'm curious what constitutes "good" versus "not good" -- in general, i think marketing people always complain that they have generated leads that salespeople don't chase hard enough (ie - salespeople being lazy) and salespeople complain that the leads aren't good enough (marketing being sloppy, just sending random crap) -- would be good to hear specific cases where it DOES work... i have seen (and been) on both sides of this argument. and it seems to be a constant battle across all industries.

I was at a company with a strong inbound lead flow. Not all great fits but even as a small company our name was out there because we had strong content.
