Have your skills been noticeably dulled by a company/role?

Writing this because a friend of mine is in a slow-paced SDR job. Lot of inbound, maybe works 15-20 hours per week.

He said he feels like he's slowed down compared to his previous SDR role which was a grind but made him into a machine and it may be a bad thing for his overall career/development

Do you think a job that's too easy can have negative effects?

Spent a year or two here or there being underutilized due to the plan for the division I was in. Definitely didn't exercise the skills I have, but got right back into it the following year. I couldn't have borne another year of the same, though. Totally stultifying.

It can be. Or it could be the other side of the spectrum. It's a delicate balance.

It is an individual thing. I don't do well with boredom, but I will say my house was never cleaner.

Certain industries move faster than others and that will certainly affect an SDR's job.

When you get a role that gives you a lot of inbound support, I definitely forget the basics of outbound and dedicating time to it

There is a culture aspect to this too I think. If you’re at a place you’re excited to be at and a role you want to do well in, you will hone your skills faster and better.

this definitely affects because you reply on one source and when things slow down you don't tend to do anything additional as a part of that culture/environment

Oh my word. I spent 2 years in a company that has a laid back culture, pretty annoying leadership and almost no leads to work on. I have become the opposite of what I have always wanted to be, at my age.
I'm a lazy gym rat that does no productive work except working out, each day. I have lost my flair and articulation quite a lot (IDK if that's possible) and I am not even that motivated in life anymore.

I resigned few weeks back, so I am trying to get that hustle back.

If you don't continuously grow you risk falling behind... same for a lot of things in life.

Oh, absolutely. But also, it's important not to burn out. So the question is whether the job is actually too easy or if it just feels too easy by comparison. I'd typically phone a friend and take a pulse check to make sure I'm not too slow.

In my current job, yes. I do think my skills have been diminished. AEs do not do outbound prospecting here, it's all trying to convert free trial leads and whatever the SDRs shove our way. Mostly one call closes too, which is different from most sales roles I've had.

my current job is way to chill. I know it will be hard to get into the grind again. However, I'm willing to milk this until it s over.

I would say if your company lacked resources and tools to be successful your skills would get better in fact even finding new ones and the same goes for if your company has all those resources and tools.

When you get a role that gives you a lot of support I would definitely forget about the basics of going out and spending time on it.
