How normal are non-compete clauses for SDR roles? And are they enforced?

I'm reviewing an offer letter I received for an SDR role and it has a non-compete clause that says I cannot engage in 'prohibited activity' for a direct competitor for 12 months after I leave the company. Realistically, I'll work this role and try to advance within the company or look for a larger role with another company.

It’s typically normally enforced if you are in a higher, more valuable position (no offense) like a senior sales leader or product. But almost all offers will have some sort of non compete and/or non poaching clause

You might get a letter from the company, but if you’re in any state outside of 4/5 in the south it won’t matter. You don’t know any trade secrets and judges want people to work.

A big thing here is that at the signing of the non compete you’re effectively powerless which judges and courts understand.

Makes sense.

I dunno how it is where you are, but I'm in AU and I've never heard of that being enforced.

I used to be a recruiter, and every agency had that; and everyone just fucked off to better paid competitors anyway. Similar now I'm in sales.

Thanks for the perspective! That is what I assumed but wanted to put it out just in case.

Read the stipulations. May only be for certain mileage. Regardless I think you'll be ok.

non-competes never hold up in court. They're there as a scare tactic. I have never once seen a company try to act on one.

Almost all non-competes are unenforceable - just a scare tactic.

Ontario just had legislation go into effect today severely limiting their use, but even before they basically meant nothing.

The exceptions to this are usually high ranking positions with a lot of IP or strategy knowledge.

AE/BDR/SDR? No worries

if you're in CA or NY, courts will never both to enforce em. if you're in a red state, it may happen.

they're usually never enforced esp as a BDR
