How to find a sales job while in school?

Hello, my name's Jack. I'm looking to get a sales job/internship for the fall of this year while still studying in school. I'm not really sure where to start. A lot of companies look for summer internships, or fresh out of college graduates. I have been passionate in sales for years, in high school selling power washing and window cleaning door to door. I also sold pest control my freshman summer door to door, and am now looking to broaden my sales spectrum. It seems to me that the only option is to find people through my own network/connections. While this is possible its hard to get the ball rolling, any advice? Thanks!

Not really sure what kind of sales work youโ€™re looking for. I heard Cisco had a new grad program ages ago, not sure if thatโ€™s still the case but I canโ€™t imagine there is tons of opportunities out there since the market is flooded with experienced candidates right now.

At the risk of being too obvious, have you tried just googling โ€œsales intershipsโ€ and applying to what you find? Thatโ€™s probably a good place to start.

Thanks for the comment, as I've read through these I have realized my sales interest is fairly broad so I should do some trimming to figure out what space I want to get into. I have googled, just found difficulties in finding an opportunity that would work well during school

Yeah, thatโ€™s a tough one, Jack.

Would be difficult to get full time sdr gigs as a student and typically sales internships are few and far between. Have you tried career fairs at your school?

Yes I have been pretty active in my school. I found some difficulties though as most were looking for up and coming seniors, especially in the places I was interested in. But I'll definitely keep going, thanks.

There should a be sales club, join it, then you should be able to find companies for internships easier.

Start with your school advisor office. Finding someone so eager and passionate about sales is rare... and should be sought after. Good luck brother!

Sales is a big world my friend. Itโ€™s important to know what type of sales you want to get into?

That's a good point, however that's also a hard one for me to answer. The only experience I have is door to door, I can assume I'd enjoy tech sales, or commercial real estate but, I need to get my feet wet.

I like the world of tech/software sales, commercial real estate, and M n A sales

I know established tech companies often have pretty comprehensive programs designed for students - you might want to check that out.

Personally, Iโ€™d avoid commercial RE for now, with many companies downsizing and moving their offices. Could be room for creativity, but you sound be just starting out, and it could be rough.

M&A or FSI - would check on the companies in that space as well to see what they have to offer to students.

Finally, your school should have a career center - stay on top of postings there, and check with those counselors, as they can help steer you in the right direction.
May I ask what you are studying?

Thanks a lot for the information I appreciate the thoroughness. I'll be looking into tech companies and MnA companies. I'm a finance major and econ minor currently.

Welcome to the WR. You may want to change your profile to anonymous.

That said, Iโ€™d make a list of companies you want to work for, research their sales leadership, and then reach out to those people on LI and ask about sales internships.

Also check with your collegeโ€™s placement dept.

To that point, many companies have information about their internships online. If you start with a list of companies youโ€™re interested in, researching what they offer becomes more targeted.

But many donโ€™t, especially smaller ones. If he wants a career in sales, now is a good time to start networking and cold calling.

There is truth to that - but the bigger companies will have well-structured programs designed for students, providing a good foundation. And without a lot of experience, it could be a huge challenge to figure out if what a small company has to offer is legit. That said, with some B2C chops, calling around is a good suggestion.

I like that idea, linked in is definitely more personal. I'll work on that, thanks

Look into school alumni that are in sales leadership now. Real easy to have an ice breaker there and people willing to give you at least an interview

Don't be afraid to go sell a few cars! You'll lose a few opportunities to party but you'll learn a lot and make money your friends will dream about.
