How to prioritize self care?

I've always been really bad at slowing down and not running myself ragged. I've been running at full speed for two decades, and the idea of slowing down gives me the willies. I always hear the wolves behind me.

How can I get to a better head space without wrecking myself and my career?

It may help you to seek out therapy. ❤

I've tried that several times over the years with differing degrees of success. It's hard not to see that most of the advice that a therapist gives is really just "intentional compartmentalization".

Wean yourself off of being "on" all the time by setting boundaries. Be ok with walking away from your laptop once you're done with your responsibilities. Be ok with putting your mobile down and turning off the ringer.

My only exceptions to walking away are those times when we're doing some last minute or late work on a contract and timing is critical. That happens less often than you think; most of the time responses the next hour, or next day, are fine. No sane person expects a response at 11 pm.

Anyway, this ties into the excellent advice from CuriousFox.

Use your calendar to schedule breaks, don't stay up too late to unwind as it'll just burn yourself out more. Get up a bit early and get some exercise. Get outside at lunch.

And consider therapy.

Learn or find what gives you peace. For me, it’s just unplugging and maybe taking a few days to recharge.

Disconnecting and being okay with it..... If I take a trip somewhere anymore it's to somewhere I can't check my emails, phones, etc... we all have to carve out sometime or we'll internally explode

Prioritize breaks throughout the days, have a hobby where you can be outside and away from the phone, and set boundaries and stick to them

Mountain biking is my self care. Cheaper and better for you than a therapist.

what does slowing down look like to you?
What would life look like if you were "slowing down"?

id probably try to answer those things first and then look at what can be adjusted to get more aligned with that.

Set boundaries - “I will work until 4:30 pm” then shut the lap top and be done for the day

See it as an investment in yourself and future results + get a therapist

Take a mini vacation first, and really understand what are the things that occupy your headspace. Then figure out what are the things that you hold control over - do something about them. If you do not hold control over the things - let them be.

then you can seek therapy. A good therapy to really untangle your mind. :)

It's understanding exactly what you're working towards and the "why" behind your actions - working for the sake of working doesn't help anyone, and it's important to dig deep to see if your current self is what you want. As well, therapy and having a strong support network look out for you is helpful!

If you like massages, book a bunch of appointments in advance. Once a month or something. May be a good way to force yourself to just be in the moment and relax. Relieve some stress. Just gotta start with forced breaks maybe and eventually, it'll feel more normal?

Find something more challenging and try to maintain the pace. Key to dodging burnout: Make sure that everyday you get at least 30min of cardio or exercise and at least 6 hours of solid sleep. If you are working in something you love you'll be good to go
