I'm old, so BDR/SDR wasn't really a thing when I started - straight to full cycle AE out of business school.

Same, except for the business school part. Inside sales to field.

Honestly I found Im a better AE than BDR. I thought because Im not the typical charasmatic salesman stereotype and was more of a volume BDR it'd be tougher. But I found my naturally curious personality vibed with a lot of buyers and ive had a really good run so far.
Its also just so much more rewarding. The thrill of a big deal and nice commission check is a million times more rewarding than getting an opp qualified by your AE

I think for me it was a lesson on how much you need to network and ask help internally. First 6 months were really hard but it got easier after that

What I've noticed at our company is that when you are an SDR you only need to focus on one thing (getting meetings usually), but in moving to an AE role you need to understand the bigger picture of how your business and company works and the entire sales cycle. Try to learn those things while in the SDR role so that you're more prepared when moving up.

I went from full cycle AE to BDR and it was tough. Bc I was really only good at closing, not so much setting meetings. And then I felt useless and got fired, so Iโ€™d say the reverse is true for going from BDR to AE. Just learn how to close and always assume the sale.

that seems like an unusual career path - is there more to the story about going from AE to BDR/SDR?

I did it in college and it wasnโ€™t in tech so industries were different and no body thought I could be an AE out of college.

Hardest part. Realizing how entitled I was begging my AE for opps so I could get paid. Didnโ€™t realize the impact that has on the AE from a pipeline hygiene and win rate perspective

Turbulent with lots of challenges, but had people that believed I could be successful

Oh boy
Difficult. I went right into the enterprise space and was put on a completely new product. Basically thrown into the pool and had to learn how to swim.
Only advice I have is twofold: show up every day, and learn your industry. People forgive mistakes but they don't suffer idiots
