I work from home full time, thinking changing my w2 to another state for lower taxes, thoughts?

I live in NYC where taxes are just bad, however. if I changed my taxes to New Jersey I will get a bigger paycheck, anyone in here done something similar

Ok, here’s the deal. New Jersey is cute, but if you really want to do this, you gotta go big. Nevada, Texas and Florida have no state income tax at all. So, file from one of those. At least that way, you can maximize your legal defense fund before committing tax fraud, a federal felony, for which you could be sentenced to prison time.

You literally have to prove that your primary place of residence is in the state that you file from. Don't even think about it.

EDIT: Just noticed your handle ET. Stand for extra testicle? You'd need at least one more to have the balls to pull this off.

Seriously. If it was that easy, everyone would be filing in NV while living in CA.

Not in the US so can't provide much insight, but I'd tread carefully. It's dangerous to mess with the taxman.
Remember - it was the IRS that got Al Capone.

Many states make you pay taxes based on where you work, not where you live. So you need to factor that into the equation. Its how they get NBA, NFL, etc. players to pay state taxes in the states where they play, not where they live.

you are assuming they won't figure this out and claw those back during tax season.

Al Capone was a bootlegger and murderer and the U.S. Government got him on tax evasion... Moral of the story, don't fuck with the IRS.

Where ever you live is where you pay taxes. Moving works for some.

The FO part is going to hurt in multiple places in this FAFO, featuring known soft hands like the IRS and the State of New York. I look forward to seeing how you manage to keep both of those two massive entities from rearranging your whole life.

How are you establishing residency? The good news is it doesn't sound like the IRS would be your problem, here. The bad news it's the state of New York, which might be just as bad.

I mean, if you have a friend who will let you put his address as yours (have your mail sent there, etc.) you might not be caught. But I'd be willing to be the state tax authorities would absolutely consider it fraud and if they can go after you they will.

Sounds like you are one of the people who watched the Senate hearing where someone eludes to paying taxes being “voluntary”.

There is a reason government are moving to digital currency and e-invoicing. THEY WANT THEIR DAMN MONEY.

Just move to New Jersey or somewhere else. NYC is a shithole anyway.

Not from US so don't know anything... But you'd need residence in one state and not the other right? How do you then keep NYC proof of address and other state address? Usually address goes to banks, goes to a lot of places... There for years... So don't think it's smart unless you have a found some weird loophole.

Do you work remotely or at the office? Would you quit your job if you had to go to the office full time? I’d quit immediately. Well as soon as I found another job 😂. Currently, I’m working from home I go to the office once in a while. I can work from any country. I went to the beach for 3 weeks and just took two days off to recover from a festival.
