“If someone interviews as well as you, with more exp. I have to hire them.” Dilemma

How do I handle this?

I honestly think it is a reoccurring theme with my interviews. I'm elite. not in the realm of exp. on my resume, but moreso in the -  go getter, wash down my challenges with tap water type.

competent and have displayed some real expertise in difficult topics and subject matter, interviews I'm killling, but I guess I haven't closed.

I guess my point or question is: How do I make who interviews me a believer?

from a closing standpoint. (I'm coming off way too confident right now but I'm modest in interviews. I'm also just confident. it's back by stats I have)

If you’re elite, why aren’t you getting offers based on your demonstrative skills and metrics? Time in seat does not always equal greater revenue production—so why don’t you showcase what you’ve done in a shorter time span?

Yeah, I saw that there were stats mentioned, so I was also wondering why those weren't being highlighted instead of the time.

I mentioned metrics in another comment.

I think this is right though. I may now be as clear as I could with the impact I’ve had.

hmm yeah this is really hard to overcome because its a less risky move on the employers side to hire someone with more experience than you.

i think you could ask "what would I have to do, to prove im better than someone with more experience" and see if they give any answers.

But you would have to respond with some empathy understanding that its ALWAYS risky to hire someone with less experience.

It’s like selling against incumbents and monoliths. How does your 3 year old startup win against an Oracle or Microsoft? You prove the value with consistent data.

Yeah so I am 20 months into being the first SDR and 1/8 in the commercial vertical at a SaaS start up. Brought in by CCO.

Only individual to prospect generate and have enterprises through the entire sales cycle.

I have doubled numbers of my peers quarter to quarter consistently. To be more literal every quarter I’ve been employed.

Look guys let’s chill lol. I don’t. Im a shitty employee here and there and def have my issues. I don’t have a manager and there is just a great deal of distance between everything I do and then the next man.

So I’m still reporting directly to CCO and it’s like dang. I need real time feedback you know? Im def green as far as sales goes. But to emphasize again ( I think we can all relate) that by saying elite. I mean I’m just confident I can learn receive some criticism. Back to the drawing board. Get better . Rinse repeat.

🤣😂🤣😂 so yes . Virtually no experience.

So takeaways for me should be emphasize my numbers, don’t say elite, and just buckle up.

Bingo! Excellent response to the critique - absolutely focus on the metrics/results.
Are you applying for SDR roles or trying to break into SMB AE?
Because SDR...not sure why they'd be focused on experience so much. Results, yes, you can provide that.

Just want to say, if you claim to hit double numbers on your resume you should be specific in what they are. If you say "I have doubled numbers of my peers quarter to quarter" that could simply mean you booked two meetings per quarter while they booked one.

Not trying to dog pile on you but it's always better to be specific.

if you call yourself "elite", you sound like a douche imo.
if you're not "closing" people in an interview, interviewers don't think you're elite.
prove with consistent value and make THEM believe you and ask more about it.

whats the difference between the next person that interviews as well as me and me? is 1 in the hand worth 2 in the bush? why do you want to play that game?

If I really needed this job and the lack of experience was a challenge for me I would challenge it back with the probation period.
And the meaning of that is I would put a challenge on myself within the interview with the recruiter that I would achieve a specific close rate for X,Y and Z within a specific period of time (like 3 months) without demanding a very high payout within that duration.
Only after those targets are being met within or after the probation period that would be the perfect moment for me to demand the highest payout I deserve.
Best of luck!

Modern companies don’t hire that way. It costs too much to onboard and train someone just to let them go in 90 days. Long term, low risk bets based on past performance is the modern hiring plan, especially in the current economic climate.

Probation period is dope though. People put fake facades up but really believing and being confident to crush is reassuring I feel.

Except it just doesn't happen, as the voice of experience stated, and why. Put up or shut up is a great concept in theory, but the reality is it's just not going to happen in legitimate organizations.

Having stats is the first step but how are your demonstrating them matter a lot. What are the commons questions that are being asked to you? Are you tweaking your answers or using the same things for these common questions?

I’m giving pretty solid answers. Some times worse, but most times striking a chord with the employers.

So following up and clarifying and learning more about them to determine the picture I paint is essential

"I think I understand. So, hypothetically, say you're dating two girls which, for all intents and purposes, are so equal in every relevant metric that they may as well be twins. You're telling me that you're gonna wife up the one with more 'experience', is that right?"
