Internal SDR I helped interview just passed on promotion to go be an SDR elsewhere.....

I'll preface this by saying I don't care at all but I'm dumbfounded. My manager has had an open spot on our team for going on a year that he has been having the worst time filling due to internal and external factors.

Finally he found a good internal SDR candidate who had been here a year and seemed ready. Had a good interview, had me talk to her as well to size her up as I had done what she was trying to do. Seemed great, I gave him the green light.

He offered her the job, she accepted, then the next day put in her two weeks. Today on LinkedIn I see she started at her new company.... as an SDR? When my boss was offering her AE?

Peep my name and you'll know I know a little about this, but I never made THIS job hopping mistake. It reminds me of that corp post a while ago "If I don't get promoted to AE in 6 months, I'm gonna go to another company and start this process all over again!!!"

PS our company and team are solid to work for and no one has any but the typical sales complaints that exist at every company.

There is probably information you don't know.  Maybe a personality issue with someone in the org or she just got a MUCH better offer based on her SDR experience.
I would ask her what happened.

Way to logical of an answer. More fun to just call them an idiot.

The only reason I could see someone doing this is if they had a substantially larger base offer for the SDR position

my guess is it's one of two things.

1. That company has a higher OTE for SDR's than your company does for entry level AE's. I have 100% seen this be a thing before

2. She just really likes the SDR role and wants to stay in one. She felt obligated to take the AE role but didn't really want it. Some people really enjoy being an SDR and want to stay one for awhile.

Either way I feel like it was a dumb decision. But I have seen both of those above scenarios a few times in my life.

I'd guess the base was higher for the new SDR role she was offered. I've seen AEs base at 60k and SDR base as high as 75k.

So, I'm guessing something like that? Regardless, if this was the case I would've taken the AE role and worked my ass off for 6-12 months and then bounce for an AE role with a higher base somewhere else.

Interview Tips for first AE role? (Moving from BDR/SDR Role)

I was hired at a really good start up about 4 months ago for a SDR role that I was told I wouldn’t be in for very long. They’re gonna go public in the next year, but Zoom Info reached out to me about an Account exec position. Now I’m wondering if I should take the guaranteed route to AE or let my shares vest and get to AE at the place that took me. Usually I wouldn’t consider jumping so quickly, but AE is AE.
