Interview

I have been going to some interviews recently where some sales Vps and leads have been asking questions like:

After they see my performance results and references.

"Tell me your secret, how did you achieve this?"

"what is your sales process, what the secret? Tell me Tell me"

I am wowwww, hang on a second. There is no secret. I mean I can recite the usual information you'd find on Sandler or meddic but you know that already. But I thought this was an interview not a paid consultation on sales?

It seems like some think there is some "secret" while each deal is different, products are different and people are different. The rule of sales apply to nearly everything but don't fish for information from candidates if you are not hiring them.

What I find rude is when they feel they are the only ones entiteled to ask questions and then at the end never allow to ask questions or simply be polite and present themselves.

How have you handeled this?

I usually slow them down and be upfront that I have questions too. If they are willing to railroad you in the interview, then more than likely they are going to railroad you during employment.

I've never really had pushback on asking questions. Interviews should really be a conversation.. I'd be concerned about working for someone who didn't allow you your time.
When I interview someone, I always make it clear that I'm happy to answer any questions they have and will ensure there's time at the end for them to ask anything that didn't come up during the interview.

Sounds as though they are impressed with your numbers, and may be asking for your insight into your success in order to validate those results. Anybody could put anything onto a resume, so asking you to explain those numbers could be the way that they ensure they're real and that you know what you're doing. And since they are real and you do know what you're doing, you can let them know it's through your diligence and adherence to good sales processes, understanding the customer's POV, etc.

With this attitude I'd guess you're not getting any offers.
It's an interview, they're going to ask you questions.

Ask them back - what's the secrets of your top performers, how are they winning, how are they over performing

I would say something along the lines of what you are saying, no secret but being great at implementing best practices and knowing how to adapt if needed

I told something similar to this Vp last week. He just started smiling and it turns out they already hired someone for the role but he wanted to meet with me to “learn more about me” yet no opening..

i had one of those recently. what i did in that instance, was send a detailed follow up with about 5-7 bullet points about my skillset and how i could use it to help their company. at the very least, you're planting a seed for down the road. even if they can't carve out a role, you leave a strong impression

Its pretty natural for them to be eager to verify the claims you’ve made through your resume. I think it’s a great spot to be in.

I broadly tell them how I go about doing my job and at the end of my answer ask them a question that is important to me. Ping-Pong conversation.
