Is 2024 the death of the Remote AE role?

Outside of the AE roles that were always remote before 2020 such as the Enterprise ones.

Maybe it is just me but I have been looking at a few AE opportunities and a lot more of them are saying Hybrid or In Office for 5 days a week. We have all heard about Zoom requiring an RTO.

Find companies that have no offices at all. There are a ton.

I skip those roles. There are PLENTY remote opps. If a company wants to control you so they can get warm fuzzies by looking at you, imagine how fucked up the rest of your job would be at that company. No thanks.

There are lots of remote sales roles, however they are more start ups or you are going to travel a decent amount.

Return To Office.

So Zoom is bringing their staff back, while their technology enabled so much of the WFH in the first place. It was a huge marketing push/angle for them.

There is a lot of competition for remote roles, but they're absolutely still a big thing from what I've seen.

I moved out of the city, I ain't going back!!

I hear you on that except I am in a city without a big tech scene but with an amazing culture.

Im currently at a terrible company but the one saving grace is their commitment to Remote work. Ive been applying to jobs regularly and 90% say atleast 2-3 days in office and most of those say 100% in office for the first month or so. Hate to say it, but I think for the most part remote work is getting gutted.

Definitely have seen a bit of a shift. As one of the comments said though, there’s so many companies who work without offices at all

Yeah but they are also unstable startups.

Hard to put a blanket statement like that over it. Sure, more startups without an office will generally be more unstable than those with. That doesn't mean stable startups without an office don't exist.

I don't think so due to the way commercial real estate is last year and continuing this year. More and more companies are going to terminate leases or not renew unless they own the building which many don't. It just makes sense with the costs and to be honest this is a $ hungry corporate world. So anytime they can cut costs to retain profit they are going to do it.

Yes but they need to fill those buildings and those real estate companies have a ton of money so long-story short, they are going to coerce companies to bring people into the office.

Interesting, how would they coerce them? The tenant decides to renew. And i'm sure commercial rent prices are quite overvalued

That is where my Conspiracy Theorist part comes in. They have money and are working with the companies behind closed doors to fill up those offices, or else office space just goes empty and they don't want that.

No - I hire near exclusively remote so that my AEs can live in or near the territory they own. Keeps my T&E costs lower while also increasing the volume and frequency of onsites we can do

Some companies are firm RTO probably about 50% another 25% is hybrid and then there's 25% that are WFH. I believe it will start to get stronger again as companies look for less space and the cost savings that not having an office has.

I feel like real estate developers are pushing companies in some ways to open up more offices though. But I am about to go conspiracy theorist up in here.

Well, they have to for job security, but, at the end of the day, companies are starting to make smarter financial decisions. For the most part

There really are a lot of companies that don't care to have RTO, and hire accordingly. Even those that don't have "territories" or "field reps".
My territory covers the US and Canada and occasionally, ANZ. I'm sitting in territory, but I'm not.
And as I mentioned in a previous post about this, I was hired as a remote employee into a company where my colleagues are literally all over the US and other countries, and in more than just sales roles.
Those companies are out there; they're not all start ups. Maybe it's easier if you're not in a junior position or have many years of experience.

Highly doubt it as there's still quite a bit of remote sales roles out there, however could see more companies find ways to enforce a 2-3 day policy depending on how close someone lives to an office.

It blows my mind that companies have not learnt anything from the pandemic. We are slowly going back into old habits and the slog of a commute.

I see engineer position in tech are WFH but a sales rep in office, like WTF!!

I’m in Europe and it appears to be hybrid or in office so if anyone knows where these WFH sales roles are in Europe, give me a heads up please as it been 6 months now

I concur with those who've said they're out there- I kinda understand why companies have been pushing for RTO after COVID, but I personally will never work for a company that is full time in office. I don't get energized by water cooler talk or ping pong breaks. And FWIW, as a new fully remote rep in my company last year, me and another hybrid rep outsold all other SMB/MM reps who were in office.

Don't put this kind of energy out into the universe!
But in all reality - no, it's not the end of remote sales work. Smart co-founders, without trust issues, will still understand that top talent wants to have the option to WFH.

The enterprises are getting to the work approach before COVID (office / hybrid)

Startups / Tech scaleups / SMEs are more flexible with the remote approach.
The most important -> To be close to your clients (traveling)

I doubt remote will ever be “dead” for AEs. Even the ones that want you in office would be open to remote if you live too far away. Like some have said on here, many don’t have offices or have their headquarters too far away. If you’re building a National/international team, you either need many offices across the globe OR you need a remote sales team.
