Is going back to BD role a step backwards?

i'm currently a commercial manager (equivalent of AE, responsible for closing deals) in a firm that has 3 business units (i'm in the one that does digital
platforms, the other 2 are like commodity trading houses). each of the 3 business units have got their own commercial managers, whereas there is a separate business development team that does pipe gen/lead qualification across all 3 business units.

in other firms i've been in, the equivalent of the bd roles will promote into the commercial manager roles (eg sdr into ae), but at this current place, they are separate tracks that are paid equally well.

the business unit i'm in has got very lousy products, along with targets that are plucked from thin air, so i’m quite sure i won’t meet target, in fact i'll be super far from it. the rest of my team has the same sentiments.

the head of the bd team has asked me to move to her team instead, and i’m considering.

Pros: bd team targets are easier to reach, therefore likely longer lifeline in this firm. I won’t have to explain to a future employer why i was so horribly far from targets

Cons: am worried it’ll be harder getting back into an AE type of role if i take the bd role now, and that it might seem like a step back in my career

I enjoy doing lead gen, but also enjoy the high of closing deals.. what do you guys think about this?

look for a new role with a better product to sell if you want to stay in sales, never done the switch back to bd myself but ive heard from others it looks bad on a resume when trying to move

would you think @BigShrimpin it looks just as bad to go from a sales leadership role back to an IC role on a resume?

leadership to IC can be explained as you preferred working on your own things or didn't feel you provided enough value as management but IC sales to IC bd just looks like you couldnt cut it as a seller and got put back

the reality of both situations can be completely different but thats how it looks on paper

BD life is great but till when is a question we all ask ourselves at some point. Some people are happy being in lead gen role, some people want an out the moment they get in.

Why not a new role, in a new company, with a better product to sell? As mentioned by BigShrimpin

Titles are fluid. Most of the time, on your resume/CV at least, you can shift your title to something "more descriptive" to what you did. And after a couple years, no one will care.

It will likely be harder to get back to AE life. But if BD makes you happier, consider it.

Thanks everyone for the comments! Definitely intending to switch to a new role, but am only 5 months into the company now, so am trying to wait it out so that it’s not such a short stint.

Seems like the almost unanimous ans on here is to not take the BD role. Thank you!

Demotion, don't do it, you'll be seen as someone who couldn't cut it in the next role despite the context you've given.
