Well, how long have you been there and how many options were you granted at hire? The opportunity is the equity payoff.

Public means you answer to shareholders and they won’t let you hide from bad results. That means goals are higher and execution must be at a high level. If you can cut it, it’s great for you. If you are below average…at least you’ll get a couple cool parties to attend.

Did you join in the late stages of growth or simply got fleeced?

I mean, why would you sign an offer at a venture backed company without equity? You got hosed.

Since you currently have no equity, sounds like it won’t be a great thing for you personally. But I +1 Rambo’s suggestion to ask for some at your next review. Then you can hold it happens. :)

Unfortunately this is true. But give it a shot at the review, worst that can happen is you're in the same situation you're in now.

Still possible that it doesn’t happen. See if there are any options for equity in your next annual performance review. You’d likely have your best a top producer, but if so you’d be justified in making the request.

There are both sides to it - performance, vision alignment, restructuring etc etc only time can tell whether it will be good for you or not

Depends on the situation you're in, from reading the comments, doesn't seem like a great thing though

Well it will probably look better on your resume if the company becomes super well known. That’s ass you have 0 equity.

Sometimes it is but yes a lot more scrutiny on numbers than in a private org

No equity sucks for you and eventually it will be a hell pit of goals that simply won’t happen. But before that happens, there will be money to be made! The IPO will drum up a lot of interest so don’t sleep on it. If you believe in the company and it’s not currently run by a bunch of shitheads, the hell pit could take a long while to sink into. Also, the folks with equity will cash out and leave offering up ample opportunities for moving on up.
