I was laid off last Christmas, but was not performing. A few of my colleagues, however, that were included in that round had all had monster years.
A lot of it is politics and how well you can spew the company drivel.

There's always company politics. I was laid off last November, middle of the pack but nothing performance related just good ole company layoffs.

Yeah… no. The honest truth is that the leadership projects unreal forecasts against recession and inflation then keep spending money on stupid shit instead of investing it into their moneymakers and then there just happens to be a “loss”.
Sure some of the salespeople were shit and they probably deserved the layoff or being fired. Overall, they can’t pin all of it on how things turn out. Shit happens in the world and sales get hit because of it.

I have seen a president club winner get laid off 2 months after the trip, anything is possible.
Assuming a large company acts rational and doesnt let go of good employees, is a very naive idea

My general rule is if you weren't on a PIP and you got let go, it's on the company, not you. You can't fire someone for performance, when you never told them they weren't performing (or in fact told them the opposite). And that's not even mentioning mitigating factors like poor market fit, poor territory, poor rep fit (not everyone can be successful selling everything at every time).

Literally got fired today for performance when I had 80% attainment for the year and wasn’t on a pip

Performance is 1 of about 250 reasons why someone gets laid off at the end of the day.
Sure, there's always room for a good salesperson. But what if you need 1 and you hired 10? I just can't even.
I was 300% over quota and I got laid off; a colleague who was friends with the CEO and was not bringing any revenue didn´t get laid off.. Explain that.

If companies were smart they'd cut HR first, they're simply seat fillers in any organization.
Agreed, recruiters should be the first to go tho. Literally if they pause hiring what are they doing? And that job can easily be outsourced to external recruiters or just put it on team managers.

To many variables of why someone get laid off, one is unrealistic quotas, 2 is mediocre managment. But this guy should be laid off just for this post.

I want to call out my old company so bad! They had to let 1/2 the sales staff go along with lots of others because they are horrible at running a business and are just about at the point of bankruptcy now.
Sales team was bringing in too much business, they couldn’t manage inventory and invested in all the wrong areas and it’s blowing up spectacularly

I got laid off from a big wireless carrier when I was hitting full quota. It happens.
Do not believe it. I think the key is to make constant noise about yourself and ask for help and try this and event this and webinar that and then also be good... I feel like being visible helps
Bullshit. I was top performing rep on my team for years. They cut me because I spoke up and had big deals with big commissions about to be paid. Once they see you consistently making 300k+ they want you to limit the comp payout.

Business is complicated. Usually bottom reps get laid off but it isn’t always the case.
Sales is one of the few roles, you can create a moat against layoffs. That said my last gig they shut down our product. Not sure how you survive that.
