Am I completely screwed?

Hey There!

Here's my problem: My resume would appear that I'm a job hopper, but there's a lot more to it. I have had exceptionally bad luck in the Tech space. I need some help on what to do!

At one company, I had to quit because I was sexually harassed by multiple men at the organization. It was a terrible experience that was incredibly traumatizing.

In another organization, leaders were caught teaching reps how to steal from the company. Leaders were let go as were reps. That was incredibly stressful. It was obvious that OTE was WAY OFF because $160K reps were not showing up as a $160K reps if you know what I mean. Long short, position was eliminated. I was kept, BUT more drama ensued. They made massive cuts to comp, it was a lot more responsibility and a lot less pay. It didn't make sense for me to stick around after having 3 different managers, and 3 different job titles in less than 1 year and a 6.5% cut in my comp. My manager loved me, and I could go back to the org, but all of my friends have told me the org is in a total disaster. Hence, more work less money.

I worked at ANOTHER organization where leadership was stealing, there was a dissolution in ownership, and it was a complete sinking ship.

At another org I got into a pretty bad car accident in outside sales, someone ran into the back of my car and totaled it. I had to do 2 years of physical therapy.

I've only had 1 role where I left because I just didn't like the environment. We were paid $17.50 but 50% comp. I had a new manager, who I never had the opportunity to interview with. Had I met her, I likely would have turned down the position. I was clear that I wanted a tenured manager, and I do feel like I got the Okey doke, but I'll take the hit for this one.

Listen, I am EXHAUSTED!!

Is this just a sign that I shouldn't be in sales? Seriously, I've had to take time off from these situations it's a lot to deal with. How can I break into my next role without having to take an incredibly entry-level position. I mean it when I say, I blow out my number, but I'm never there for long because of the shit show that ensues. Is this just new-age workplace drama? Is this a major shift in corporate? I used to work in another industry and there were never these types of issues...

Lastly, the companies on my resume are BIG NAMES, which is why I can't say anything. I'd love my issues to revolve around, I don't really like JIM, but it's fine. We can make it work. OR, we all have to pick up a little extra slack around here. However, I'm not interested in corporate trauma bonds. I'm starting to think that WeWork Culture was really just Tech culture (pre-covid).

Please help, I need to get a new gig ASAP but my mental health needed time from all of the work chaos. Not to mention, my home life basically has to be perfect because heaven forbid there's any drama and both aspects of my life become total chaos.

That does sound exhausting.
And no, none of that is normal. For comparison, I've not had any of that.

Can you post a redacted resume with your experience on it? Maybe get some advice from the group on how to best position yourself as an achiever? What was your position/role at your last employer?

I totally support this. There are all kinds of resume acrobatics you can pull off. I've had 3 jobs in the time it takes @Sunbunny31 to close an average deal (mind you, her deals are not average). Nobody knows the difference but me and the anonymous crew in the WR. Post that puppy. We'll help.

Thank you! I'm trying to figure out how best to position why I left, or even how I can get my resume in front of recruiters. I don't want to air these companies out, but it becomes difficult when I just want to summarize that my experience is the reason why a lot of VCs are no longer just doling out $$$ in the SaaS space anymore. Wework became the face of a lot of issues that the Tech space normalized. Not all companies, but definitely a large enough percentage to make an impact. I'm incredibly grateful I've worked at big tech companies, but yikes!! They are definitely the reason why we are seeing so much of a shakeup. I know corporate Bro pokes fun of this too, because it was SO BAD for so long. Any advice regarding how to position, or get in front of recruiters would be super helpful

So I once went through workplace bullying, took me a year to be positive again and have faith in myself. If you can, get yourself in to therapy and talk about these things... It sounds like you're in a survival mode and it can't be sustained. Can you take an easier role or consider lower role for a bit? Sorry to hear you've been through a lot of tough situations at work and in personal life.

Thank you for your insight. I've gone to therapy, and I do that pretty quickly after I leave. I'm happy to hear that you've made a healthy recovery!!

I’ll play devils advocate here so don’t take this the wrong way. Sexual misconduct, stealing, and mismanagement are all 100% wrong and you should be comfortable talking about those situations boldly if they come up. The part that makes my ears perk up is when you talk about mental health and making your home life perfect. As both of these things are important, they are also things you will continue to sacrifice if you want to be a top performer in sales. Marketing, biz dev, and customer support are much better departments if your focus is on work life balance. That being said, if your goal is to just be a quota carrying rep then ignore everything I just said

So sorry you've gone through this, but it's definitely NOT normal.
Hopefully you get a chance to post that redacted resume and tap into the collective knowledge and experience of the War Room.
