Job security in B2B Sales

Hey War Room,

Today I am writing to ask for your honest opinion about job security in the life of the Salesperson.

In my experience, it has always been and will always be fragile, not knowing if and when you are gonna get the axe even if you bled your blood and sweat your tears for a company that lets be honest... Doesn't give a flying fuck about you, your family, your house, your kids, your mortgage, your husband or wife, your pet goldfish or Aloe Vera plant... None of it.

Not knowing what the 'investors' are saying behind closed doors..

You could be the shining light of hope one month, with offers of a raise if you "get those deals signed".... then a blood sucking vampire the next... 'How dare I ask for a raise or even think of it' I say to myself, in monologue at 3am.

I wonder if there is some oasis out there, where seasoned Sales people are safe and dont have to worry their other half about the possibility of getting fired due to whatever reason... By the way, I have not been threatened to be fired I am just speaking from past experience :D ... Hope it stays this way... I will update on this ....

So tell me, whats your experience? Do you know something that I dont? Have I spent the last 15 years barking up the wrong tree or just got unlucky? Or is there such a place that exists in this cruel world..

Can the role as a B2B Sales professional ever be truly secure at a company they what to stick to?

Please do name some companies if you can and they do exist!

Iโ€™ll be honest - there is no such thing as job security. Period. Everyone is on the bubble regardless of performance. I have been let go being above quota and I have seen guys skate by for years at under 10% attainment. There is often no rhyme or reason.

IBM once stood for lifetime employment. As well as other companies. You stood by them, they stand by you. Itโ€™s no longer the case.

So what do you do? Work hard and smart. Also keep your eyes open to other opportunities. Performance helps with job security but itโ€™s no guarantee. So learn the game and how to play it.

No job is secure. Career job expectations went away decades ago. Best bet is to do the best you can, make sure you are a great employee and have skills that will serve you no matter which way the wind blows.

A good sales person will never go a day without money or women. So fuck the security, if you know you're the best.

Our profession is windy, very windy. So security is not our thing. The only sure thing is that there is nothing for sure :) Living by that principle is a relief.
