Job Switch Gartner vs. MongoDB

I have been interviewing at Gartner & MongoDB. I've been in SaaS sales selling for over 4 years now and enjoy it quite well.

While Gartner is a concept sell & will be a very different experience, MongoDB is a good entry into core tech sales.

Would you have any recommendations on how to go about choosing a path for the long run?

Give us some more deets on your situation.

What are your goals?

I agree with others here, Gartner would be a step in the wrong direction, away from what you like.

On a serious note, I've been focused on hustling since I was one of the first hires and have seen the team grow. I'm now looking to enter a bigger org, build a great CV before I look at a managerial role. All of that to say I'm not particularly in love with SaaS anymore & want something exciting.

I dont think there is a "bad" decision here. And there are many variables. Taking money out of the equation, ask yourself where do you want to be in 5 years and which company will be best be able to help you get there.

I have friends & former colleagues that work at both. Anything you specifically want to know? I'd be happy to ask them.

For your friend at Mongo - I really want to understand if having a technical background is the indicator for a successful sales role as well. The offering is extremely technical & it'll require me learning the ABCs.

My buddy is in the conference side at Gartner and made 450K last year. I heard that side is killing it, at least on the global conference. No idea about Evanta side of Gartner.

Thatโ€™s sponsorship Sales not conferences.. doubt conferences sales would make that much. I was there for 3 years

I would back channel and talk to reps to learn more.

I did see Mongo has a better ranking in the salaries here

Stay away from Gartner and the like. Youโ€™ll lose your SaaS motion and sell a dream that companies can be in the Magic Quadrant.

Hmm while that's true a little digging into Gartner alumns told me they do end up getting into SaaS later on as well. Doubt it'd be a complete exit?

You might be able to go back, but you'd be behind in the skillset that you are already building today.
