Jobtitle 'Sales ...' preventing answers when cold outreach?

My boss is questioning whether an InMail from a person with a jobtitle like Sales Development Representative is preventing people to answer those Mails. 'Obvious someone wants to sell something.'

I am convinced that it has more to do with the content of the InMail and less with the jobtitle of the person who is sending the mail.

What do you think? Combination of both? Content? Jobtitle?

I actually agree with your boss- titles with Sales in them, especially SDR, tend to be written off immediately. I hate the trend of fluffy tires, but it’s been more effective in my experience. I’ve been a “junior sales representative” “sales representative” “technology consultant” “account exec” “key account manager” “major account representative” and “Midwest market manager” in my career. Always got better response rates with titles that don’t have sales in them.

I think Technology Consultant could be it! :-)

LinkedIn is pretty wild with all of the automated outreach. I don’t blame your boss for not responding. Maybe they could just say not interested thanks instead of staying silent?

I agree with both you & your boss. Yes the content of the inmail is very important! BUT when they get to the bottom & see it's coming from an SDR, they'll see it's someone trying to sell them something. I fudged by job title on my email signature & LinkedIn

I have experienced that the title does matter during outreach, you boss might be right. How do you outreach? Just send inMail or start with connecting and engaging a bit with them before pitching product. Are you catering to SMB/MM/ENT?

Trying to engage (emotion first), followed by education. Trying to get a meeting first, before starting to sell. Targeting MM.

Nah, 1000% of the content and probably more than likely the length.. depending on who your ICP is that you’re contacting.

As long as you're talking to the right person and presenting the right value, your title won't matter.

If they think that is what's stopping responses they're a little dim, you're selling a product not yourself.

I go with a soft ask first. Ask to connect on LinkedIn because you're really interested in (Insert thing that they are interested in).

Once you're in it's easier to go for an ask.

Why not try an A/B test. Send the exact same email out to the exact same amount of people, but change your title for the second one to something different. Business Development Rep or something. See if the metrics change. Nobody is going to care or notice if your title on LinkedIn changes a bit. Ya hear?

I think prospects are starting to get wise to the titles that sound like they're not sales but are totally sales.
