Moving goal post for promotions

Hello community. I'd love to hear stories on how your employer keeps moving the goal posts on you when being in a position for a promotion. Do you try and meet the goal post or find the goal post closest to you in the job market? It also makes you wonder if you strike while the iron is hot in your career. Curious to hear more from the community.

Let’s call this what it is- a broken promise. Moving goalposts is happy talk for “I can’t/won’t do what I said I’d do for you.” Trust violated. I’m out hunting.

Some people keep their word, most don't. Find those who do.

Like less openings? So more competition so you need to perform better to be the best candidate

It’s a promise they shouldn’t have made in the first place. Rule #1 I learned: don’t make a promise you can’t keep.

Many times to move up, you need to move out.

Moving promotion metrics is a red flag to me

I had a colleague who had that done to him for about 3 years. I came in and got promoted within a year. He was abrasive, challenged leadership in a poor way and in general a polarizing guy.

He finally realized leaving was the right move.

Moving goalposts is a clear sign they dont wanna promote/pay you more. If thats the case you need to start looking for a place that will be the role you are trying to get.

Is there any internal reasoning for the pause?
Rev is down, hiring freeze etc?
