My company is crushing me

I have been working for a small startup for a couple of years now. In the beginning it was fun and I was getting to figure things out with them and I enjoyed it.

Over the last six months or so I have just found working here to be soul crushing and it makes me miserable. I was promised a promotion to AE in September of last year and they told me in October that they actually didn't need any AE's right now. Then they promoted one of the SDR's working under me to an AE seat.

I worked in a closing role in the past but had to start over during the pandemic which is how I became a tech SDR. I am on my 3rd year of SDR work (making dogshit compared to what I made closing deals) and I am tired.

WIth the economy I am afraid to leave my job but coming to work here makes me hate my life.

I mainly just needed to vent but does anyone have any ideas of what I should do?

I am ALWAYS am job hunting... ALWAYS. Even when things are going great, I'm keeping feelers out there.

Two reasons:
(1) you never know when that one job will pop up. You know the one dream job you picture yourself doing.
(2) So I'm ready for the day my current job is basically over - either IMO or someone else makes that determination for me.

Always be hunting!

I used to always be looking for something else but I got comfortable here. Wish I had never stopped looking

Apply elsewhere. Don’t overthink it.

They told you one thing (no current need for AEs) and did another by promoting an SDR working under you to an AE role.

If you’re doing anything else but putting in the minimum required effort at the office while looking for an AE role at a different company, you’re doing it wrong.

It doesn't hurt to start exploring other options. If you can rustle up some other opportunities and bring them to the table at your current employer, it can really help your case for moving to AE within the org. If they don't bite, you now have some options to move elsewhere.

Have you tried having open conversations with your management about this situation?

this fucking blows. sorry to hear it. the SDR life is an absolute grind.

i would at LEAST apply to other places. no need to make a jump if the perfect opportunity doesnt come up but at least poke around.

Good advice here already - but I would just add to keep your current job while you look. You have the luxury of having something in hand, even if it’s wearing you out, while you look. Best of luck!

Either buck the heck up and hustle your ass off for an AE role, or look for a role that suits what YOU need and when YOU need it.

Be open to new opportunities and pretend nothing is wrong at the current org. Treat them the same way they treat you.

Been there, still there.

Took a remore job and jetted off around the world

6 months in thailand

some time in finland

helped a friend scale his startup on the side as well

end of the day the job treats me pretty poorly so i just take advantage of the all remote policy and jet off enjoying life

Always be prospecting...in your job and for your job. Keep grinding internally, but always going to be smart to explore other options externally as well

Jump ship. Ideally find a new role before leaving but no shame in doing something that isn't a resume builder like caddying or hospitality to make ends meet while you find something better.

I'm in the same position. I've been taken advantage of for the past two years and I'm v tired.
So, I've made up my mind that I'm leaving but only when it suits me. It's not easy but I'm doing it for me. That's what helps me get through it.
Good luck. Have a goal, stick to it and you'll get there. Always be looking in the meantime.
