My first Q coming to an end

I'm jacked! My first quarter officially being on a sales team, with true sales goals and targets is coming to a close!

I tallied up all my quarter metrics and it looks like I'm hitting 2 of my metrics, and falling juuuust shy of the 3rd! all this to say is it feels great being able to control your pay and I'm so glad I took the plunge to get out of technically supporting sales as an engineer!

Question, how do you guys use your commissions - my goal is to use them both responsibly and for fun, but curious if you spend 50% and save 50% of those extra, non-guaranteed earnings?

I am 80/20. 80% split into long term savings, short term savings and debt. 20% for me. I’m bonused once a year now, so it’s a larger purchase that I always plan for and it’s such a great payoff feeling.

Congratulations!
Advice: don’t spend it before you have it.
Put some aside as savings/retirement/paying off loans, etc.
Something for yourself - something you’ve wanted for a while or a trip you can now afford.

Keep it up!

The methods that has worked best for me:

All the monthly things you need to cover and want to cover should be paid for by your base pay.

Then every commission check i split it up.
1. Short term savings: Xmas, vacation, trips ect
2. Long term savings: retirement pretty much
3. Fun money.
I assign a % to each category so each one gets attentions every check i get.

It’s worked super well for me.

Sock it away in savings. Sales is a roller coaster. Feast and famine.

Congrats on a great quarter! We have been putting a lot of money back into our house right now, which is more out of need, but certainly hope the investment pays off in the long run.

After making sure you got all the essentials covered.
Let's talk luxury, buy a new car, trade it in for a better one if you have one already or maybe think of its renovation.
If all good with the car think of any other In-House equipments you may need like AC or electronics.
If you still have some spare think of traveling for couple days with family or friends!

Congrats! And please, whatever you do with it, do it responsibly. If you’ve got a 401k max it in the month you’re paid. If not, think IRA. It’s really easy to see it as free money when it comes in 1 chunk and your expenses are covered. It ain’t free. It ain’t a gift. You earned it.

If you want a thing that your base won’t pay for, drop some in the thing account and use it as incentive to make it twice more. Make it twice more and buy that badass thing.

I am all for splurging within treason, you’ll likely be a lot happier saving the majority of it though. Expensive shit is a very temporary high.
