My manager’s supervisor is getting on my nerves.

My manager will get onto me and be fully transparent he has different (I suppose lower) standards than that of his manager. I am of the ilk that if you have issues with anyone regardless of chain of command, you go directly to them (also telling their manager whats up) and let them know.

Is that the wrong mindset that I have? I'm willing to take any criticism valid or otherwise, but I'd rather hear it from those who may actually have those ideas.

Your manager's supervisor should not be supervising you. FFS. I wouldn't trust these comments directly from my manager. He needs to cover my ass, and I shouldn't be reporting to 2 managers who have different schools of thoughts.

Your manager is in the wrong for not covering you up. Talk to him / her / they / them / it.

Chain of command and org charts exist for a reason.
Sounds like there's a lot of pressure from the top and his supervisor isn't handling it well.

So, your direct supervisor is riding you but blaming his boss and apologizing when he gets on you?

Brother man, you’re pissed at the wrong guy. Your supervisor is undercutting his boss purposely to be your buddy. Your direct report is spineless.

No no, my boss doesn’t care. He has explicitly said so. We’re also closer in age so i think that may have something to do with it.

Over all supervisor is feeding him lines, which I guess is my companies M.O. bc of “chain of command” ideas. Idk if i made that more or less confusing for you- let me know.

Nah- I get it. Your further explanation confirms. I’m guessing your boss is relatively new in his seat. His saying he doesn’t care is basically insubordination and gives you mixed messages. You may like your direct boss, but he’s designed it that way. That’s no way to lead.

It isnt but I will say, I’ve known my boss for a while and know he doesn’t adhere to the things the supervisor is trying to push on us (frankly neither does he lol.) It makes me a bit frustrated, hence the post, since I sometimes feel maybe I AM the problem.

I don’t think so- if the internal company messaging was consistent, you’d have less doubt.

Are you hearing these issues and comments directly from the supervisor ? Or is it only from your boss who says it’s his supervisors fault?

I am hearing from my direct that it is directly from his boss (who technically is both of our bosses, if that makes sense).

Him throwing his supervisor under the bus is weird. You gripe up you don’t gripe down. Does this guy have a problem with conflict or something? I wonder if he is actually hearing these things from his supervisor or if he is making them up?

It’s a red flag if he is constantly not taking responsibility for what he says and does around you and makes excuses and throws them on his supervisor.

Perhaps a private conversation with the supervisor to clear the air is needed

Precisely my read. Weird shit.

I get that, i guess I cant relay the fact that my direct and I have had a super open relationship in terms of my feelings on the job and vice versa. We both feel some way about the company and I dont think it’s necessarily his fault- as my boss himself doesn’t adhere to the things pushed by the supervisor. Its kinda complicated in that regard

I mean if there is such little confidence in this supervisor that no one is following his lead there is a much bigger issue here.

You are even having a hard time explaining the dynamic which is super weird.

Perhaps you all need to sit down and hash out the expectations moving forward. If you keep not talking and keep it status quo this will only get worse.

Yeah I cant say it would. My over all supervisor is a great sales guy, not sure leadership is his bent though.

I think you've gotta adjust yourself on this one.

You have a preferred way of communicating, directly one on one, but that's not how everyone else is. You're going to find more people who want the opposite of you. I've learned this the hard way, because I'm similar to you in that. But at the end of the day, if more people operate the other way you should adjust because it'll make it easier on you and on them, creating better relationships overall. If you go down a path of "no one is communicating with me the way that I want" you'll end up isolated and trying to figuring out why no one likes you. Trust me, don't walk down that path.

There are key times to swallow your pride and meet them where they are instead of asking them meeting you, this is that time. Plus, you've gotta take the same approach with customers anyway, you gotta meet them where they're at, not the other way around. Do yourself a huge favor and adjust, don't ask the world to adjust to you.

Yeah I definitely feel like I did for some reason. Maybe DataCorrupter’s comment above is correct and Im just thinking too inwardly, should adjust as needed.

Do you hear these questions and comments directly from your supervisor? Or is it just your boss who says its my fault?

My boss relayed as he heard it. My boss doesn’t exactly follow these rules and he makes it known he personally doesn’t hold himself or us to these standards, he just wanted to be transparent with me on these things

If you’re better at golf or can bench more than them, you’re technically their boss and you should let them know
