Need some advice

Hey everyone,
Long time lurker/infrequent poster here. Love the war room! In a bit of a predicament.. I sell HR outsourcing and was unfortunately let go for performance end of last week (Had to many deals push with budget freezes.)

I just had a final interview with another company for a staffing sales role and it's a great fit. I'm pretty sure background screen is the next step. I'm assuming when they run background they will reach out to previous employers. Do I tell the recruiter I was let go for performance before they run background? Any advice is appreciated! Thanks!

No, don't tell the recruiter unless asked!

Lots of times the background check is done by 3rd party not the company that gave you an offer. Majority of the time they just confirmed you worked there and ask for the dates of employment.

Congrats on the new role though!

Thank you I’m excited about the new role! And that’s good to know! What worries me is if they ask for dates of employment, won’t they see that I was terminated?

Good luck in staffing, are you starting in sales or recruiter? I know some have you start as a recruiter

Thanks I’m looking forward to learning a new industry! I’m starting in sales but they will have me sit in the recruiter seat for the first 90 days to fully understand the process. I’ll be specifically staffing for Finance/Accounting. It’s a competitive space, but will be targeting CFO & Controllers and worked with them quite a bit in my past role and they are always having trouble finding qualified people so the need is definitely there.

Background screens are often done to ensure you’re not a sex offender or criminal. Did they ask for references?

Also, most employers (read: HR teams)will not comment on previous employees, and certainly not their performance, beyond confirming you worked there. Humans be litigious.

Thanks for confirming! They did ask for references, One is a peer who sold the same and left for another opportunity/industry recently. The other two are peers from a past role so should be good there.

You were just let go last week, and you're already in the final stages of landing a new job? Nice!

Don't volunteer this info. The employer will give the dates of employment, but shouldn't provide any reason, which means the new company won't know unless you tell them. If they do ask about you leaving your job, you don't have to let them know it was because of performance.

Yeah I had a rough last quarter and was pipped end of February, so wanted to be proactive and started interviewing asap. Sounds good thanks for the advice Sunbunny!

Don’t lie but don’t give out something that’s not asked as Kosta and PCB mentioned that can jeopardize your chances. All the best, I know you will do well !

NEVER tell them you were let go for performance related reasons - point to the economy. And tell them your previous boss was let go at the same time so there's no one to really reference you there unless you were buddies with a coworker who'll tell them what you want them to know.

Nope you don't have to tell em unless you've been asked to do so.
Termination for performance shouldn't be even a worry for you, as they don't know your past working conditions/working environment, what did your old leadership look like and whether you received the required support with your targets when needed or not!!!
And even if they knew I do believe that it wouldn't count as one of the rejection reasons by any means!

Best of luck!

background screen and reference check are different things.

background screen is to make sure you are not a criminal.

reference checks are to make sure you dont suck.

They most likely wont call anyone you dont approve of them calling so just have a few names ready to go and make sure those ppl know it.

Don;t teel them. A lot of background is just comfirming your degrees, no convictions and you worked where you said you worked. A lot of times they do not even discuss the performance
