You could go into Customer Success, Account Management, SDR manager or a totally different profession.

I get that. But as soon as you apply for another role or job outside of sales - hiring managers say โ€œwell you are in salesโ€ โ€œwhy come from sales to thisโ€ โ€œyour background isnโ€™t relevantโ€

I was an AM after being a BDR for two years and now an AE. I know a few that enjoy AM/CS far more than AE roles.

There's also Revops, but I'm sure you'd need to get certified with SFDC and a few other CRMs.

How long would you say youโ€™d need to be an SDR to move into CS/AM ?

Also, a side question - what is the difference between an Account Manager and Customer Success ?

I've had colleagues move into AM after 1-2 years from BDR/SDR, but It may be harder to do that right now with the tight market.

At my old org, AMs did all the upsells/cross-sells, renewals, and vendor billing and got a % of the upsell.

While CS did everything posts close/technical setup.

It differs by org though.

Thanks for the insight, this is useful.

Iโ€™m assuming itโ€™s best to move to AM/CS in the same company rather than apply to another ?

Do CS get commission too ?

Would you say your experience from SDR to AM was a positive experience ?

Fair assumption. Tenure hold big points on a resume.

AM and CS will vary in definition between companies, but this is what the be found to be the general truth.

CS largely focused on customer satisfaction and retention. They are more or less the fire fighter coordinating resources to help de-escalate issues, connects SMEs, handing renewals, etc.

AM could be thought of as sales rep into existing accounts.

Depending on the company these roles could have some overlap in that definition. Iโ€™ve personally worked as an AM where I was also handling all CS functions. Moved to a company that only had CS and they where also selling.

Most of the SDRs I have known go AR route as there is more money . Really depends what will keep you happy - money, flexibility, or any other goals. Some of the other routes I have come across are AM CSM, Support rep.

I've managed over 30 SDRs, and I've seen that other career paths one can take include:
Account Management, Customer Success, Sales Operations, SDR Leadership, or Marketing.
However, a lot depends on the growth opportunities available at a particular company. Each company and team is unique.

Many BDR's that I've seen move on to roles other than AE have moved into Sales Operations, Event Management, or Marketing.

Usually people who love the engagement, getting people's attention, creative approaches to generating curiosity / interest from prospects, but hate the pressure and cold-calling, find these other paths to be a great fit.
