Overqualified for SDR underqualified for AE

I am hoping to get some help breaking into the SaaS industry with previous sales experience including management and driving a company to acquisition.

Quick background:

  • Most recently built a company with four partners over 8 years to acquisition (main role biz dev and managing sales). This was a service-based product specific to the Real Estate industry.
  • Prior was regional sales manager for a D2D company selling telecom and deregulated energy (100 sales reps)
  • Prior to regional a mixed bag of sales management and sales representative roles over the span of an additional 10 years.
  • 37 years old

After the acquisition, I decided to dive head first into SaaS sales. I have always been passionate about technology, software, and sales. I cannot for the life of me get a simple interview. I have applied to AE roles, SDR roles, BDR roles and am falling on deaf ears. Keep in mind these applications sent are including personalized cover letters and resumes specific to the roles.

After some feedback from recruiters I reached out to at the companies applied, I am hearing I am either "overqualified" for SDR/BDR roles or "lack experience" since I don't directly have SaaS sales experience for AE type roles. I have no problem starting at a lower role to learn, apply and grow.

Do you have the patience for an SDR role with a clear discussion about ramp up to an AE role within 12-18 mos?

I am completely open to this path. This is part of the reason I have also applied for SDR and BDR roles.

So you need to communicate that you are open to “starting from scratch” in order to bring your skills to a new industry. The passion you have for software and tech and the willingness to start as a BDR has to be clear in your resume or cover. Acknowledging your qualifications but admitting that the vertical and industry are new and providing reasons to take you are going to be key.

Honestly though, we’ve had people starting out unable to get a job because they have zero qualifications or experience yet at all, so this just sounds a lot like recruiters and hiring managers utterly spoiled for choice right now and throwing excuses at people.

That’s broad. Do check Bravado jobs.
I would search for companies on Linkedin and start networking with the hiring managers / to-be colleagues for a coffee chat.

Thank you, I have started LinkedIn networking and like the idea of a coffee chat.

I'm just most confused about not even an initial interview opportunity.

You're only underqualified if YOU believe that is the case. You need to sell yourself, not your experience.

Do you have advice on selling myself via cover letter/resume? I agree completely, but I am not even getting an initial interview contact.

Look for companies like Chili Piper - they focus on promoting from within. When they hire SDRs, they want you to either get promoted to AE or choose to stay at the SDR level yourself.

I would agree you are far too over qualified for a SDR role and probably need pay above what SDR offers. You won't like being a SDR honestly, your coworkers will all be in their early 20s straight out of college. Managers won't like you because you they prefer naive workers they can mold into perfect SDRs.

While at first it may seem like all SaaS orgs are looking for SaaS AE experience to be an AE that's not true. I've helped people from pest control and beauty sales find SaaS AE roles you just have to know where to look. Both Datadog and Toast are companies that come to mind that would make you an offer with your experience. More are out there.

You don't seem underqualified for SMB AE at all. Maybe just keep going, try verticals you're familiar with?
