Put on a PIP - how do I beat it?

16 years into my career I find myself in uncharted waters where day 1 upon return of vacation I was put on a 60 day pip. A lot of the activity metrics are beyond aspirational, some feel impossible considering the time of year, but here I am.

I've always felt that PIP was just documentation to fire you, or hope that you'll take the hint and quit. I decided to not take the exit option (no severance or anything) and work to beat it. I've learned of two people in my company who beat PIPs years ago, but otherwise anyone I know quit under the pressure or got fired.

The job market seems brutal right now, it's a good gig, at a great company, with good pay. I'd love to hear others experiences here. Am I stupid for trying to beat this thing?

Fight back with logical goals based on average attainment compared to a year ago.

If they donโ€™t budge, and they donโ€™t fire you faster, then launch that job search.

Try to negotiate the terms of the PIP or have a candid conversation with your boss about it. Either they are willing to work with you or this is a way to push you out. Also, have you been performing prior to this?

Performance is great in some areas, not as great in others. I had a huge Q4 last year and I feel like that's not being considered here. It's an enterprise role with slower cycles, and one or two deals totally changes the trajectory of the year.

I'm really hopeful intentions are what they say, to right size certain habits and behaviors for which I'm taking responsibility and actioning on. The prospect of getting fired is very scary.

Yeah man, it looks like things are slowing and management is looking for any reason to cut headcount. See how you can work with your manager to get through it.

So this is something to communicate to your manager - and hopefully these behaviors aren't real challenges.

You know what the answer is - if you think you can beat it, try. If I were you, I would start looking out as well as I am scared of cash flow getting stopped

In my humble opinion you do not beat it. You find a new and preferably better gig.

Challenge is this is such a good gig, and in this market, I'm not sure that exists.

Nothing against trying. I just feel that a PiP is a HR thing not a sales thing.

I was put on a PIP the Tuesday after returning from Memorial Day a couple of years ago. Blindsided at 8 AM after a very long weekend by the VP. The requirements were to close $75k within 30 days with the option to extend another 30 days if I was hitting the bullshit KPIs.

By the end of June the VP was fired, I hit the number after being extended 30 days and was 160% to goal for the quarter.
Don't give up and keep grinding.

I beat a PIP and it was only worth staying for another year. If you truly think you can beat it and your boss wonโ€™t have a target on your back at every move after you beat it then stay and transfer teams if possible. Sometimes a new boss can be wonders for your career and sanity.

Fight back - or start looking out. PIP never is worth it. It's a gamble. you are already in bad books.

The job market is MOODY right now. If it did not negatively effect your peers, then you're in an okay spot, but if it did, then I would look for other jobs after you beat it.
