Rejection from company, when do I try again?

Context: I recently was reached out to by a recruiter to speak about an AE position at a unicorn SaaS. Pass phone screening and do not get past the next round. I was extremely discouraged because one, the rejection and two, it was the worst interview I've ever had and my expections were high. (Manager never even asked for my resume nor did recruiter. I was asked about my last 5 years of experience though the position only required 1-2 and I am in my fourth year as an AE. Zero feedback and also completely ignored my "closing". The manager was totally disengaged.)

This company is a top 5 for me and I would ideally like to take another shot. Should I take the interaction with the manager and the interview process as a sign and dodge? Should I even try again? Has anyone been rejected and now working for that company? Trying not to be super discouraged here but also realistic.

TIA

I recently went through a similar with a disengaged final round. CEO showed up 10 minutes late, on her phone from the road, camera off, and thought I was someone else. I asked her to reschedule for a time when she could pay attention. Her mind was elsewhere. She didn’t want to. That’s the hand I was dealt. Dog shit- but I’m not finished with them.

“The hiring manager was disengaged” is just not a valid reason for your failure to engage them. Roll the tape back from the 2nd round and figure out where you lost engagement. Don’t lose it next time.

Hiring managers, like prospects, can have a shitty day. They can also make a shitty hire. If you were turned down for a current opening wait for a new one. Try again.

You might have been a simple ‘checkbox’ unfortunately and they might have someone pegged internally for the role. That being said if you want to try again, go for it! What do you have to lose?

If you don't have an internal champion advocating for you - don't pursue it. It won't happen. And the recruiter doesn't count.

I bet they already had made an offer to another candidate.

The first question I'd ask here : Why do you want to try again?
If a company doesn't have a good hiring process, the interviewers are not professional enough to give their time and attention to someone they are looking to hire, they are most likely not a firm you would want to engage yourself with.
That said, whatever happened in that call is not personal. Multiple moving parts, leave it and move on. There would be better opps coming your way anyway. I get it that it's top 5, it's okay. Sometimes the bests in the world are not the bests for us.

Move on to the next. That said, you can keep your eyes open for additional opportunities here downroad. This is a rejection for this role at this time. Things may change.
