Saas offer - bad time to transition?

Just got an offer I've been hoping for.  Established company past the "startup phase". Big jump in OTE. Big name in their space with proven product market fit.

I've been in the medical world my whole career selling diagnostics, have done very well in my current role, but ceiling is nowhere near this opp.

with all the news on SVB, plus macroeconomic factors, is now a bad time to make the switch to SaaS or worth pursuing?

Sounds like it would be dumb not to based on what you’re saying.

Makes sense. Only concern really is if these conditions cause layoffs. They haven’t so far and it seems like they have plenty of money right now, but I’d be leaving an org where even in this economy I consider myself very “safe”.

Has this company had high turnover lately? If they expected the business to be affected I am sure they won’t roll out the offer.

Risk is everywhere, you have to make choices based on your gut feeling:) all the best

If you have money in the bank saved and able to take a risk without going bankrupt …why not? Sometimes recessions are the best time to make changes / start a business. Just keep your eyes and ears open on what’s going on with your new company and jump ship before it goes down.

If they haven’t been laying people off or making the news for all the wrong reasons, sounds like a great offer.

no the SVB. macro economics does not make SAAS a bad option......it does make working at shitty non profitable companies a bad option.

but sounds like from the brief description that this would NOT be that. so id take it.

especially if its a company you have been wanting to work for for a while

I’d say same as most. From a sales standpoint we’re doing pretty good. But org is cutting down on spending quite a bit. Had layoffs within last 6 months and fortunately I was good, but I’m also a top performer.

Be sure about their runway...

I don't think we're through the worst part of this recession yet.

I'm in medical diagnostic (imaging). Rejoined old company because of the stability.

Trouble in the tech space doesn't mean there's trouble for /everyone/ in the tech space. If the opportunity seems solid, and is something you could see yourself thriving in, don't let headline dissuade you.

QQQ is up the last 5 days, I dont know what to expect.

If you are paid a lot more and not happy in your current role, probably should consider. What made you look in the beginning

I think you could just wait till the crisis is fully over and things getting better, then go ahead with the transition so just give it a couple of months let's say, best of luck!

Makes sense but unfortunately I don’t think it’s that easy. I’ve actually been looking to transition into saas for years but no organizations would consider me for the higher paying AE roles I’d need for it to make sense due to my previous lack of saas experience. This one ended up being a great fit because of my experience in the industry they call into. Doubt I’d be able to wait a few months and find another opp like this.

Ask about runway. Ask if they have concerns over the SVB situation. It’s okay to push on a company with these hard questions. You are screening for them just as much as they are screening for you. The opportunity as you’ve described sounds great, but ask what you need to and do your due diligence.

I got scared about 9 months ago and did not make the jump. Now I'm again in the same position. TO bad I'm this risk averse

Most SaaS companies are not profitable. Miss your number and they let you go. These SaaS companies promote high OTE but they just move the goalposts. Beware of the promises they make.

If they’re past the true startup phase, it’s def not as risky. If you believe you are ready to make the switch, and it’s an industry you already know well, seems like a strong fit. Id also make sure they have a strong ramp / training to get you where you need to be. Even mid-stage startups give a few months ramp before expecting you to hit/exceed your number.

It's not a bad time, the bad companies have been weeded out already. A company hiring now is probably rather solid.

SAAS isn't a bad move. If the company had a strong ICP and has market fit then it's a good move. I would suggest finding a mentor that can help with your transition early, and invest heavily in your own skills development. It sounds like you're landing a great gig - it's up to you to make it happen! Good selling
