Sahil's post on WFH

I'm sitting here scrolling through LI and I read @sahil post on WFH. It all makes sense and he has a point, to be sure. WFH is great, I'm productive, etc...

However, from this sales guy's POV, WFH is the single greatest killer of my ability to get in front of my prospects and clients.

The office centralized decision making and conversation. Gave us a meeting point.

Have you tried to get meetings with prospects only to hear "I don't work at the office and nor do my co-workers. We all live really far from each other, so meeting with you in person is impossible"

Of course I offer to meet them where they're at, but "unless we can bring in the whole team to talk, its pointless" comes up a lot. Even the "free lunch" doesn't pull them out of their nesting holes....houses.

As someone who both targets and leads a team who targets "whales" (large, long-term sales deals), getting in front of customers is paramount to moving a deal along. That eye-to-eye contact, being able to remove distractions, seeing body language, being able to bring in others into a conversation at a moments notice (and not having to schedule it on a calendar 2 weeks out)..... all of it contribute to success.

So while I relish in my WFH status (something I have enjoyed for a very long time), encouraging my customers to WFH is not helping this sales guy.

I guess it really depends on the vertical, meeting in person is not a benefit in my software vertical.

some solutions don't need the face-to-face, but it sure helps mine.

I've not been able to meet customers in person as frequently as I'd like, but most of that is because they're in various regions. WFH or not, they don't seem to be located in any single geo.

I too manage a very large geo area, but I'll travel to them. Sometimes I want to shake them and say "take off your PJs and do your job!"

I'll happily travel to my companies, but my accounts tend to have their employees scattered amongst their own geo regions, which is the challenge. WFH or not, they tend to be disbursed.

My prospects are all over the place so WFH is perfect for me, but I do see how it's rough on ENT whale deals.

I'm going to be honest, I have to go into an office 3 days a week now and my god did I miss it. not saying this is the case for everyone but with 2 kids and a wife that loves assigning chores the office is an escape.

It's all tradeoffs. A lot of things are easier/better in person, but I don't like driving and most of the tech hubs are located in places I don't want to live. All things considered I prefer WFH, though it's not without its own issues.

Rumors are Microsoft is calling RTO later this year, so this is a little silly, but it's pretty clear that like Amazon it will just be for forced attrition.
Edit: Also, god I miss business travel. It feels like all of my large deals take 5 times longer and don't get sold correctly because of the lack of in person white boarding.

We are facing that challenge later this week in a presentation that would go much better if we were able to be in person. The customer declined for this round, but yeah, we'd love to be whiteboarding instead of trying to accomplish the same thing with slideware.

I am remote. Have successful Teams meetings all of the time. You don't need to be physically sitting on top of folks to win deals.

I agree with you, try to offer any extra advantage for them to attend (e.g free ride beside the free lunch), at least to help you pushing for the main meeting to apply the eye contact and the other good points you've referred to, once that task is over, you can proceed the upcoming meetings normally while WFH👍

I love working from home. I've been doing it for 8 years. I can confidently say that people love working from home because it allows them to fuck off 80% of the time.

I definitely don’t agree with the screwing around 80% of the time thing. I probably put in more hours in a wfh situation than working in an office.

We see a push to more in person meetings from leadership. However, I don't see an advantage for me since it does not impact me quota. Also driving 4 hours is a lot of calling time lost

I have been in my role for five years, close 1.5m+/annually, and have met in person maybe ten times total. It is not always needed for me and my product. I am also not in SaaS. I WFH and if a potential vendor aggressively pushed a meeting in person I would chose a different vendor.

Not everyone’s solution needs an in person visit. If your sales cycle is less than 1 month, it’s probably not worth an in person meeting.

But face to face is rarely a bad thing.

I wholly agree, to a point. I have been focusing this year on Win/Loss/Slippage in my deals. It has been helpful, and I have to say if my product/market would allow it I think I could stop slippage a lot more with some in-person face time...but typically getting that is almost impossible.

My tl;dr is that we should be intentional with our clients/processes and meet them where they are.

In my opinion, at least you need to have one physical meetings during the sales process with your customer. Just to build the human touch/relationship.
However, I had closed $3mil contract last year without seeing clients' face at all.
