Salary increase for new position and COLA- my employer HR is telling me “we made a market adjustment from your old base (for my old position) to your salary increase (for my new position) and added a 3%COLA to add up to your new base to come to your total new base. What?

Base went up. Cool. What's the question?

This seems like an unnecessarily complex way to phrase it, but without understanding what the end result is for you, it's kind of hard to provide any opinion on the matter..

Did your base go up? By how much? Was the 'market adjustment' more or less than what it was previously?

@FiestyFeline26 I think most would have the same interpretation you did, as $100K+3%, but they definitely factored it in.

They're just looking to save money, unfortunately. I don't want to do the math, but you got a weird raise for the 3% to all of a sudden equal $100K even.

But it's still a solid bump!

I’m realizing how unclear my original question was - don’t post and slack friends.

I’m glad they explained it, and that’s a solid bump regardless. Congratulations!

what are you asking? I think what they said makes sense. You got promoted whihc usually means you get a new higher salary. And how they gave you a new salary which also factored in 3% COLA added in.

Maybe be easier if you gave us numbers previous to now.

Sorry- I hit post too soon and then couldn’t find it. 🙃 I guess I’m wondering why, when I negotiated a raise to the new base, they aren’t adding the 3% COLA on top of that, and instead are “baking it in” to my new base total of $100k. I thought Cola would be separate from base increase as it accounts for market inflation. I’m not meaning to be a whiny bitch- I’m grateful- I just don’t get it.

No i think they facto it all in. Or so they say at least. be curious to see where you where prior to getting to the now 100k. My company doesnt give raises unless you are promoted and definitely no inflation/COLA increases/raises. They say if we do that we will have to lay ppl off. And then still lay ppl off. So consider yourself lucky!

I think most organizations dont give you promotion + COLA in general unless you work for a big 4 accounting firm (they keep up w/inflation always year on year).

Thanks for that! I was at a base of $89k and change prior. Moved to new vertical, negotiated increase to $100k. When I heard I was eligible for COLA, I Thought it would be $100k + $3k. Thought wrong! I just wanted to be certain I wasn’t missing an oppty to advocate for myself (esp given last year this same situation occurred and I got COLA on top of my raise 🤷‍♀️). The business outlook and economy were better then. And I’m grateful. Just making sure I’m asking the right questions.

Connection got me an interview that I otherwise wouldnt have gotten because of field change, not due to intellect or abilities. Position is managerial and, from what I gathered, stated salary plus bonus. Should I negotiate, which I always do, or go with what they offer?
