Connection got me an interview that I otherwise wouldnt have gotten because of field change, not due to intellect or abilities. Position is managerial and, from what I gathered, stated salary plus bonus. Should I negotiate, which I always do, or go with what they offer?

I dont want to jeopardize the possibility as they are going to offer me the job, I'm being told by my contact.

Would it be off-putting to counter or would they want to see the aggressiveness?

Imagine you work at a bank and you're switching to tech widgets. Not the case, but you know what I'm saying.

They are kind of doing me a favor but at the same token know I will bang this out and be successful for them. I don't want to seem overly greedy.

It really depends, man. But based on how you’re saying that they are doing you a favour, it doesn’t sound like you have much leverage. Don’t counter just to counter but if you feel like they are lowballing you just because they feel they can, I would definitely counter.

Have they pretty much said “you know, we’re doing you a big favour by offering you this opportunity” and you basically agreed?

Agree with the top part of this. Countering for sport and without supporting logic will put you in the tactical box. But a transparent "can we get away with this" should meet some resistance.

Leverage, that's just it. I was in the industry a decade ago. There are current employees there that could probably transition easier than I. That being said, I can still dance the dance. Nobody has said they are doing me a favor, but I read minds! Or maybe mine is just going off the rails.

Good points, thanks for the input

My point with asking you that is if it’s credible that you could walk away from this opportunity without batting an eye and you’ve positioned yourself that way (not by saying it outright but just based on how you presented yourself during the interview), then a counter offer, if done correctly, shouldn’t jeopardize your chances.

Nothing wrong with an element of "I'm worth it" when you're negotiating.

What research have you done on salaries the company pays? Is it not online what your expectations? And how much more are you negotiating for?

Nothing is posted. I was told there are two levels of pay and that 'my contact' was going to get me in the loop on the upper level.

Pay is 135k and I was going to start at 160k to hopefully land 145-150 range.

There is upward mobility here, which is why I'm second guessing it. I don't want to be that guy right out the gate they always remember in the back of their head that got too excited with negotiating.

Recommend to go with the offer as it is, not cuz you might sound greedy cuz we know that you aren't .
But just cuz being accepted in a managerial position in a new field is not so common to happen so I consider you really lucky.
So asking for more to me might jeopardize getting it, so I recommend you to wait at least for 6 months then start bringing things over the table!

Always negotiate! You are at a disadvantage, so tell them that you want it, here is what you were thinking on comp, and see what they do. If they hold the line, find another point on perks (I need $ck a month for my gym/home office expenses). male it more token. I personally like to push on equity in those situations since “I am going to make this company grow, and I know a great team and product when I see it.” Something like that. Always show value, and a little push makes you look better and be a higher value.

I would definitely ask how flexible they are with negotiation. Did you earn less vs what they are offering? Asking for a 20% hike over the proposed number might not be a good idea.
