Sales, why we do this.

Sup WR,

pondering late night thoughts and it’s the first Sunday I don’t have scaries going into the week and it will be that way for the next 1.5 months due to a deal that got dragged over the finish line last week. So I’m left here thinking how I got into this wild ride of a career

everyone’s story for sales is unique and figured I’d share mine.

I went to school for civil engineering but really I majored in partying and chasing tail. That said I went on to work in hospitality met my now wife and we wanted a family. Had a college degree and no idea what to do.

Family friend had a sales opening and I took it cause of solid pay and health benefits. 6 months in, let go. Found a BDR job and that was the worst company I was ever a part of so I quit that role and it was the best decision I ever made. Then, was out of sales for 3 months and working extra shifts. Found a new BDR role and after another RIF that happened at that org after a year landed an AE role and the rest is history.

made a bunch of cash along the way, also had quarters in which I didn’t sell a time and been in depressing moods because of it.

end of the day I’ve come to the conclusion that my job doesn’t define me but it certainly eases stress when I’m performing well.

thanks for coming to my ted talk.

Why is it that partying and chasing tail are often a common thread. I can’t deny it. My first job on the phones was all about beer, weed and a car. The rest of it has just been a parlay into and throughout adulthood. Enjoy your 6-week holiday stress break. You know damned well what comes next.

Dare I say that all who make their livelihood in sales are in nature hunters. We love the thrill of the hunt, the uneasiness of the chase, the not knowing how things will turn out, and most of all we love to be that person that closes the deal and brings in the notoriety and payout that comes with it. Well done my friend and enjoy the time off with your family and a nice cold beer or maybe two or three, oh what the heck get a case and have a party. 👍👍👍

First and foremost!

We are all here because of the money – you won't find another livelihood, career, or job where you can earn the money we do, unless you're highly educated.

I can easily follow your line of thought about being 'nervous' or 'afraid' to enter a new week, a new month – I've had that same fear many, many times. However, I've learned to live with it and actually don't experience it anymore, but it was really there at the beginning of my sales career.
Customers come and go, the same goes for money – nose to the grindstone and just keep pushing forward!
The reason I sell and am a salesperson is that I love, love, love talking to customers, challenging their viewpoints, and generally establishing a close connection to see how my product can contribute more sales, more value, and of course, there's my commission that comes with it.

Enjoy the break!

It is not easy when you are not performing. But I think realistically you will have companies that do not perform well and you might have to start building from scratch. You will get back to performing. Enjoy the break

I love the idea of earning my money. I’m not some middle manager at corporate hiding with a salary. My performance is easily track-able and there for everyone to see. The tough times are hard but it makes the good times that much sweeter.

It's in my blood, I guess. 'Sold' snow shoveling and leaf raking door to door in elementary school. Killed it in retail at 15. Had a similar university experience to you and always enjoyed talking to people, solving problems, and making money.

And here we are.
