SDR-AE promotion stick it out or Job hop for promotion

If you are an SDR with a career goal of becoming an AE, what are some signs that you need to move onto another company to be promoted to AE? For context 2.5 years experience and best performing sdr at 2 series A/B startups with no clear promotion path. How will companies look at sdr's trying to jump companies for promotion? Should I just stick it out at my current role or try to jump to AE with 3rd company?

It's hard, I literally just made that jump myself today. It takes a LOT of applications and positioning work you do to be related to closing deals. Try to take on as many AE responsibilities as you can and put that on your resume/linkedin
I did that and had a few recruiters reach out for AE positions
Also ask the ones reaching out for SDR roles if they have any AE positions available
Good Luck!

We hire a good bit of SDRs from other shops to be AEs, frankly being an SDR is WAY harder, and I’ll take a top performing SDR over an average AE 100 times over

We used to have a track for SDR-> AE, if there are not some in the company already first red flag. Talk to your manager about it often and ask for intros to the leaders of those teams and get on their radar. Ask for it, and see if its real.

Do not SDR hop place to place is my word of caution, someone will give you an AE job maybe internal may have to look outside.
