Self-Diagnosed ADHD Sales Pros: Do You Pomodoro?

I have an awful time focusing, mostly because social media and connectivity have likely ruined it for me...and I have adult ADHD. Not medically diagnosed, but as I wrote this I took the time to do 3 other stupid small tasks that were unrelated to this post.

I shared on a thread last week that I have taken to using the Do Not Disturb feature on my MacBook, putting the window I am working on in full-screen mode, tossing on some deep house, and leveraging a Pomodoro Timer to get focused work done.

How many of you use the Pomodoro Method to split your time up for prospecting/admin/focused time blocks to ensure you remain zoned in for 'X' amount of time? For reference: https://todoist.com/productivity-methods/pomodoro-technique

Serious question: Is it possible that your (and other's) adult ADHD could be our brains being trained to have short attention spans and seek instant gratification due to social media and technology in general?

Yes, I 100% believe that social media and immediate access to content is what is driving adult ADHD.

I think it drives child ADHD a lot of the time as well, especially with kids who are introduced to it at an early age...

I'd still see a doctor. I was diagnosed in my late twenties, and nothing has helped me more than my medication. Good luck to you.

The fact I can't get a physical until January is making me think I'll be coming in with a laundry list of things to fix.

I heard a certain Mr W is offering free physicals if you're willing to come to his hotel.

Could apply pomodoro to the pasta system, every 4 pomodoros you eat a small bowl of pasta.ย

How about we flip that. Every 4 bowls and I do a pomodoro

Definitely improved productivity since implementing pomodoro compared to my previous method of looking at goat entrails to see what I should do.ย

I don't need no Gwyneth paltrow tea gods helping me, sales is a battlefield and goat entrails are my battle standard.ย

As someone who has been formally diagnosed, medicated up the ass and STILL struggles with ADD - yes I have tried this.ย

My issue has been that if I get up from whatever task Iโ€™m zoned

SQUIRREL!

ย in on, I will immediately find something else notย

SQUIRREL!

Productive and cannot force myself into whatever else Iโ€™ve had planned. Like, my subconscious isย

SQUIRREL!

ย Actively trying to find ways to do ANYTHING else.ย

So I need to put some earplugs in, isolate myself from LITERALLY any disruptions and not get up until each task is complete (however long that takes).

ย I start each day with a list of things I expect to accomplish, and it should fit on a post it note (otherwise Iโ€™ll be overwhelmed and frozen).

I still need to improve.

ADHD is such a challenge as an adult and I don't want to rely on medicine forever but it might be the key to unlocking my full potentially. Or drinking less, but that's probably unrelated.ย

Fellow adult ADHD-haver here.ย

So, I lean into the spontaneity and don't really block my time; BUT I try to setup backstops to make sure stuff doesn't slip through the cracks.ย

One example; together with my Ops person I've created a CRM Hygiene dashboard in Hubspot that helps ensure that if I forget to create a task or a deal, I get an email about it every day at 4PM. Can touch on the specifics if you're interested but basically it catches any open deal that doesn't have A) a future task or B) a future meeting.ย

I was diagnosed with ADHD during pre-marital counseling of all places. My wife wanted to use her therapists program and I was diagnosed in session 1. Things like Pomodoro are fantastic for some, but might not be as effective for others. Always go see a doctor if it's something you think you have. For me, technology ended up being the enemy, so I recommend checking out the high performance planner on Amazon, really helps me a lot.ย

I use a timer and I delete social media twice a year for at least a month. TBH that last part is what has helped me the most. When I don't have social media it sucks at the start. But a few weeks in and I fill that time with more productive activities.ย Whether those are work-related or personal. I would highly recommend it.ย

I was diagnosed with ADHD when I was 8 and one thing I learned is that social media exacerbated the symptoms 10-fold. It's a lot easier to focus when you know you can't check insta or facebook every 5 minutes.ย

Thanks, appreciate your responses. My insurance then was structured in a way that didnโ€™t cover that much of it. Iโ€™ve worked with a psychologist and psychiatrist since and got a handle on whatโ€™s going on upstairs (for the most part). Mental health is such an important thing that is finally becoming more of a part of mainstream conversation but thereโ€™s still so far to go. Canadian healthcare is great, but is woefully lacking coverage for the mental health side, at least in Ontario.

OK, I can really help with this one. I do not have a diagnose but feel the same way and social media had destroyed my focus. Do this: delete facebook, tiktok and IG, from mobile, and just keep twitter on mobile (least visually engaging).
Do not do Pomodoros, block deep work sessions of 90 minutes (eventually 60) Seriously, it takes like 15 mins to dial in, then you are in the zone.
Do one a few days and I swear you unfuck your brain. Just use one monitor and focus on x number of tasks (so like a pomodor without breaks). This method did wonders for me at a time I thought I'd never fix my focus/
Pomodoros are way too short. 60 - 90 mins get you in the zone and at the end of the day, your brain feels it, as well as the results!.
PS content switching is terrible - do one task at a time and think about focusing intensely!ย
