Back in April, I was at a startup, they laid off all the sales and marketing teams to go in a different direction. I don't know founders believe sales doesn't define organizations anymore.
While I was there, I made a cold call to a vp of sales, who liked my opener, tone, the questions I asked, and how I handled his objections. He ended up saying he wasn't the DM and that he didn't need the tech, so he said it was a long shot at the company, but he said if you're ever looking for a job, I would love to have you on the team.
I called him after I got laid off, he gave me the job, no interview just a talk with the SVP of sales. They brought me on the team, paying me a small base salary, but said a lot of opportunity to make 6 figures in commission. The problem is ever since I joined, they kinda just said when we have a new product we want you to run the sales for it.
They haven't come out with a new product, I get slacks every 3-4 weeks or so saying just hang tight keep getting paid for doing nothing for now. So I go play golf during the day, workout whenever I want, I could even go out on a Tuesday and wake up at noon the next day with no repercussions. It's a great gig to get paid for doing nothing, but the problem is the base is 50k which doesn't go very far in 2023.
I took on a commission only role on the side in medical devices, that I work like 4 hours a day for visiting dr offices and such, but it takes 2 months to get paid my commission and it's not any higher than what I could be making at a tech company, but can't get any interviews for AE or AM roles at tech companies because I don't have experience selling to big logos or any track record.
I'm tired of sitting around doing nothing. Should I go all in a job search and just focus on one job or go all in medical device even though, I've barely seen any commission?
(Sorry for the long post)
