Some kind of joke?

A hiring manager reached out over what sounds like an EAE role... with an $80-90k OTE.  Laughable. I rarely point out stuff like this but cmon!

This got me to think, what is a good compensation in a HCOL area?  With everything from buying lunch to traveling getting more expensive, I'm starting to think double what this place is offering doesn't even cut it (as someone who is financially disciplined but doesn't track expenses or budget).

150/150 seems standard for enterprise AEs

I started replying to these letting them know that their offer is insultingly low and the company and its leadership should be ashamed for paying so little in a HCOL area.

Yeah that’s less than half a normal OTE is, basically a SDR OTE.

My OTE at my last job was $75k. $50k base salary.

in NYC? Your money sounds fine for entry/just past entry level in the midwest but terrible for the coasts.

I'm in Texas, sort of near Austin (don't want to give away my exact locale). I'm in a weird spot experience-wise. Been in sales 9 years, but only 3 have been in the B2B software space. Was kind of stuck after a layoff and took a job with a substantial paycut. Figured it would be a relatively easy job and some pay is better than no pay. But I ended up doing terribly (to be fair, I wasn't alone in that) and getting fired. So, now I'm unemployed and probably looking at yet another paycut. That's life.

That OTE is incredibly low. Not sure what it looks like for other folks, but in my current role OTE is $140K for me as an SMB AE, which I've seen as median in the area I live in.

When it's harder to close business, a livable base becomes even more critical. So lowballing reps is completely taking advantage of possible desperation, but it does become a vicious cycle.

In NYC too, which is like making minimum wage. Make sure to tell them that's an insultingly low offer especially given NYC taxes

AI is cool, but the old man laid it all out.
We leverage it in our platform, but we're very close partners with Microsoft and use OpenAI as the engine. They love it and have been open doors for us at massive organizations.
We're also using it for a specific use case, that's legitimately helpful to solve a major problem for our clients. And it's just a small part.

I think that's the way forward if you want to be successful with it.
You can use the sizzle/buzz of AI, but actually back it up.
