Started a new role a month ago.. Not sure if I love it! What do i do?

Its been a pretty decent month or so at this software company. Hybrid model but you have to earn the hybrid piece. I think whats bothering me is the culture and some of the flexibility. Im not sure if I want to stick it out or not. I was laid off at my last company and it was pretty tough to find a new AE role.

Any thoughts? Should I quit being a complainer and get to work?

It's pretty early. I wouldn't love the infighting either, but everything else may be discomfort as you begin something new. It's hard to make changes and be starting again, particularly when you enjoyed what you did and where you were originally. That said - that company let you go, and that door is currently closed. So try to adjust to the new situation. Look for the positives that you can find, and take note of the negatives (such as the infighting) so you're aware of anything you might come across that could affect your job. Other than that, just keep plugging away. Sometimes a job is a bridge to a better thing down road that just hasn't come up yet.

One month in is not enough time to form a true judgement of a new job imo. Both my current job and my last job I was unsure of my place/happiness in the role for a good 2-3 months until i really got stuck in and found my groove.

Take a look at your position, do you feel like you are properly stuck in yet and comfortable in your job as far as knowledge, skill and ability to do it? If you feel you arent there yet but can get there then stick it out.

Eitherway i wouldnt be rash and move now, i would try make it work for a good 4-5 months before coming to a firm decision.

I think the culture is just different from what I used to have (I worked 5 years at a well known SaaS company before taking on a new role that ultimately eliminated 30% of their staff). I am used to a lot more transparency org wide, winning as a team ( our office fights with another other office a lot about opps), we have to fight to win deals against partners. I love winning as one!

@Kosta_KonfuciusI don't mind earning the hybrid piece, I think that is smart and I respect it. Just some perks and little things are lacking from what I am accustomed to. Maybe I am just being too critical on my situation and not looking at the bright side. Job, money, etc

I am definitely in @Space_Ghost20boat in a sense, took a cut to get something moving because the market is whack. I wanted to get back in there and start selling. I have already seen success there.

Good Advice @sketchysalesI think I just need to roll up the sleeves and dig in more. Maybe Ive just had it easy the last few years.

@CadenceCombatI think thats good advice. I gotta give it a chance. I just always think "did I fuck this up?"

You you don’t know if you love it, it means you don’t 🥲
If I am doing well I’ll stick there for sometime to see if I am able to see any changes that’s aligned to some of my beliefs. If I think I can’t stand anymore, I’ll definitely find a new one.

No company is perfect you will have a adjust bits and pieces here and there.

Always keep a few feelers out there. Always.

That said, only a month?! Give it some time.

Hunker down and see where it goes. I think it's too early to start making broad-stroke decisions about whether or not you want to go. Excel at your job, network internally and build your reputation as a problem solver and leader. I can't even begin to tell you the sheer number of people I meet that will bitch about something ENDLESSLY but only a tiny handful of people will actually work to fix it.

Are you the victim of your story or the hero?

I mean, I'm in a similar spot. Laid off, only job offer I got I took. Highly transactional sales process, average sale is $50 MRR (give or take), took a big pay cut (went from $75k base/$150k OTE to $50k base/$75k OTE). Been here 4 months and really want to leave and find something more in line with what I was doing and making at my last job. Consensus advice I've gotten is the market is whack and it's a really really bad look to just go jumping around so I should probably plan to stick it out for a year minimum and probably more like 2 years. I don't like it, but sometimes your luck is what it is.

I wish I had more concrete advice, but honestly I don't think things are going to turn around for a while.

What is wrong with the culture/flexibility? How does this differ from what you were told during the interview? Is it solely you have to earn the hybrid model? How long until you earn it?

If you are unhappy, then sure start floating your resume around. But get your story straight and have a clear understanding what went wrong and how to avoid it at the next place.

Try to love it until that becomes untenable.

But, even then, ‘love’ is a pretty strong word. Maybe try setting the bar at ‘not hating it’ and see if it grows on you. Give it a chance.
