Strategy Meeting with my Boss

Dear Sales Savages,

wanted to reach out to the community to get some blazing ideas for the upcoming strategy meeting with my boss.

Boss has asked me to prepare an overview on the current status and a business plan for the upcoming year. We basically do this every year and some actions are then put into the annual goals.

Boss is asking for:

  • Current status in your region (Difficulties / Opportunities)
  • Competition
  • Main customers you will focus on – Account plan
  • Products we should focus on in the region

We do not have any templates or account plans that we fill in and work with. So its up to me what i make out of it.

What is your advice to make the best impression, give a great outlook for 2023 and still ensure that management does not feel an urge to explode the sales targets?

1)Make a top 10, next 10 of the accounts you are really targeting - these are are your big bets for the year where you will dedicate the most time and resources (partnerships/alliances, exec connects, RBE's etc to get)

2) Its simple but a SWOT analysis of your patch/region can be an easy way to display info to boss

3)If you are worried about sales targets increasing I'd highlight the economic headwinds we are facing and mention prospects are mentioning budget constraints

Great advice, only thing i would add is on the competitor side. I would write about the competitors you have lost to and the feedback you received on why they choose x over your solution.

For the top 10 accounts, I would also put what they are doing right now instead of your solution to create a game plan

I usually include this in the "threats" part of my SWOT analysis.

I am lucky enough to have a team at my org dedicated to competitor analysis and feeding us great intel and landmines to plant.

These are good. Definitely emphasize #3 if you're worried management is going to aim for the moon.

here is how i would work through this:

1. just jot down the answers to these questions. very simply.
2. go back through and add as much detail as possible. the goal for me is to not miss anything.
3. Go back again and ask my self "what does my boss NEED to know and what do i WANT him to hear" delete things that dont answer these questions.
4. have each point be 1 or 2 slides in a deck. make the deck bullet points and you have notes to expand on each point.
5. have as much data and facts to back up any statements you are making.
6. When you identify problems, talk about how you would solve it.
7. ask for feedback

This is perfect. And then keep the template for next year, because if this happens every year, you can be prepared!

in addition to what everyone is saying

Be able to answer every topic with

1) This is what Ive been seeing
2) this is what ive been doing to overcome it
3) this is a way I can improve or an idea for better results here

Back up each point with data.

There are a ton of good business review templates online. I think HubSpot has a good one. I would make it my own and edit as you see fit. Being prepared will earn you a lot of brownie points with your boss.
