Switching to Pre-Sales Engineer

Hey folks,

First time posting here. I'm currently an AE working on SMB account. Mid/Long term career goal is to make a progression to Enterprise sales.

I was currently approached for a pre-sales engineer role.

Let's say I were to accept this offer, would that put me on the back foot if I want to move back into a full sales role or there are some benefits to it?

I'm curious if any of you did a similar move, whether it from AE to SE or SE to AE

It does feel like more of a step back than a lateral move. Might actually make it harder in the long term of things.

Itโ€™s a big change. If you donโ€™t like closing or stress, or are very technical, then it might be for you.

I like the technical aspect of it, but I'm not sure I'm willing to give up the rush you get of closing a deal. At this point I'm more asking it to help with the thought process

Fair enough - big decision.

I think it could hurt your chances externally but not necessarily.

Itโ€™s a big switch I would say if you arenโ€™t happy with the stress of deals or prospecting, it could be a good fit.

I donโ€™t think it would be that hard to go back to a full sales role later if you want, especially if you stay with the same company

I would definitely think it would delay a progression to enterprise sales because they almost always want to see 5+ years of experience closing minimum

It's what I'm afraid of. The experience gained will not exactly be considered when trying to go back to a higher sales roles
