Tenure at latest 4 roles

4. 13 years - company sold
3. 4.5 years - company sold
2. 1.5 years - shitcanned
Current - 4 months and about to blow out

Each about 25% of the previous. On pace to last a month at the next one. Might make health insurance. 401k vesting is a pipe dream.

Is it just me?

Look - when you are an IC, you have to do you. There are a lot of crappy companies with crappy leaders out there and I don't see that getting any better in the next year.

One of my secret hopes of the tech recession is that it provides a bit of a refresh for people and processes.

It’s shaken out some really decent people. We’re getting some hardcore new normal. Some of this squeeze will ease when the balance of power shifts back a bit. Some will stick.

Here's mine to give you some perspective:

4. 3 weeks
3. 5 months
2. 8 months
1. 5 months

I'm going on a year in my current role, though. The trajectory can certainly change. It's just about finding the right company.

There`s no formula really... it`s a mix of macroeconomic climate, industry, and personal life events... here`s mine, no pattern whatsoever except that i can`t really last at a company for more than 1.5 years if I`m not advancing or making enough.

4. 1.5 yrs - toxic environment, high-pressure banking sales, reported to four different managers, no commission whatsoever...
3. 1.5 yrs - dead-end company, major customer didn`t renew and all downhill since then.
2. 7 yrs - built a solid book of business, earned a decent commission each year, base got higher with each promotion. Covid hits and they slash our base by half - I start looking.
1. Almost 3 years here, so far so good :)

That's very different than mine - not sure it's you, though. Even though it appears to be a tightening funnel in your case.
Mine:
4 years
-gap-
1.5 years
17 years
2.5 years ....and going.

Damn that 1.5 year job SUCKED. Where's that post about the worst place you've worked again?

edit: clarity

Ha! Or maybe you're just more inclined to move on rather than stick around in a bad situation.

That's pretty normal these days, just cuz you were tenured enough you had a chance to know the fate of these companies, yet hundreds of other previous employees - you probably worked with- didn't even know the status of their ex employers particularly that one you stayed those 13 years at:)
Just curious what was your last title you reached at your first workplace with the longest term..!
